The video begins and we see a large apartment that we've not seen in these videos before. The apartment seems to be mostly open plan. On the far side we see large windows looking out across the ocean. Next to that we see a room that seems to be a home gym. We can't see the entirety of the room but there is plenty of equipment set up that we can see, and it all looks as though it's extremely modern and well used. The rest of the apartment that we can see looks extremely modern as well. Standing over by the windows stands Zoe Sperling, better known to the wrestling world as Syren. She's looking out the window and she begins to speak without even turning to face the camera. “I haven't actually lived in this apartment that long yet, and you know this sight still takes my breath away sometimes,” she says, standing there and clearly enjoying the view. “It really is an amazing sight. From up here the world looks peaceful, you know? From up here no matter how rough the water gets it always looks scenic. We're way too high up to hear people's voices or see much detail as well, so the people moving around just look small. I guess this is the way that a lot of people in the wrestling business see the world every day. They look down on people like this, they look down on people from their ivory towers and they think they're so high above everything. They think they're untouchable. They're not. Even so I guess I can see why they'd want a view like this. From up here everything below looks small, it looks insignificant. I guess it's pretty easy for them to deal with the world when they can think of it that way.”

She turns to face the camera with a serious look on her face. “The problem is that no matter how much people want to look down on the world, they can't look down on it forever. The business we're in doesn't allow that. This isn't a war in that sense, there are no generals looking at everything from afar and moving their troops around. This business is a battlefield. No matter how desperate you are to elevate yourself above it all, you can't elevate yourself when everyone around you is grabbing at your ankles, looking to pull you right back down in to the chaos with them,” she says before smiling. “So if you can't escape by standing above everyone else, on the proverbial mountaintop that so many people talk about, then how do you escape? How do you separate yourself from everyone else? I used to ask myself that exact same question. I used to ask myself what it was I needed to do in order to gain that separation. I used to think that I could climb above everyone else, that I could stand above them proudly. I used to be ridiculously naive. It's taken me a long time to figure it out, but I finally have. The thing about this business is that you can't ever escape, you can't ever climb above anything, you don't get a podium to stand on or an ivory tower to lock yourself away in. The thing about this business is that to prove that you're the best you don't elevate yourself ABOVE everyone else, you get down in the middle of them all, you get down in the midst of all the fighting, you surround yourself with competition on every side, and then you overcome it. That's what it really means to be a champion.”

She pauses for a moment before smirking at the camera again. “And that's the key word right now, isn't it? Champion! That's why I'm filming this video, it's why everyone else is filming theirs, it's what everyone has on their mind heading in to this weekend. Not just the SCW World Heavyweight Championship either. Ok sure, that's a major focus, there's a lot more than just four of us keeping our eyes on that situation, but every championship. This weekend is the night where everyone has championships on the mind. There will be a Battle Royal to determine a contender for the Adrenaline Championship. There will be four teams battling it out to see which one of them gets to call themselves the SCW World Tag Team Champions. There will be three women going toe to toe to find out which one of them gets to call themselves the SCW Women's Champion. Only two are clashing over the United States Championship, but that's going to be a battle between them nonetheless. Just two face off for the Underground Championship as well, but that also promises to be a war. And in the main event, at the top of the show, in the biggest match of the night is where we'll see four competitors step up for the right to call themselves the Heavyweight Champion of the World. It doesn't get bigger than that,” she says proudly. “And this year, for the second year in a row, I'm a part of that. This year isn't like last year though. This year I'm not walking in as champion. This year I'm not going up against a long-time rival I've fought a dozen times. This year I'm going to in to battle because that's what it's going to be this Sunday.”

“So, this is the part that you're expecting the normal clichés, right?” she asks, pausing again and smiling at the camera. “You know the ones I mean, don't you? They're the same ones everyone uses at this point, this close to the weekend. This is the part where we throw around phrases like 'the road to Rise to Greatness', where we throw around phrases like 'the greatest showcase in SCW'. Yeah, those phrases have become used for a reason, but I'm not planning on standing here right now and talking to you about them. I'm not planning on standing here right now and firing off some clichés. Instead I want to talk to you about something else – passion. You see to me that's what this Sunday is really all about. That's what's driven us to the point that we're at. That's what's kept us going no matter what happened. Every time we've been knocked down, every time we've been slammed to the mat, every time we've been driven down and told that we were done and that there was no point in fighting it anymore it's passion that has kept us going. And we've needed a lot of passion to get us here, haven't we? I'm not just talking about me. I'm not just talking about Jake Starr. Hell, I'm not even just talking about the four of us who'll meet in that ring on Sunday. I'm talking about the entire roster. We've all needed a lot of passion to get us to this point, to drive us to stand on the edge of this precipice and look down. It would have been so much easier for any of us to just have given up earlier on, right? We suffer a few knocks, a few setbacks, and it would have been SO EASY to just walk away from it. But we didn't.”

“Every single competitor who's getting ready for this Sunday has had to overcome something in order to get here. Every single competitor who steps in to that ring on Sunday has had to prove something along the way. But the ones who've had to prove the most, the ones who've had to work the hardest, the ones who've had to show the most commitment and passion, are the four of us entering the main event. Now that's not a knock on anyone else here, it's really not. I have no doubt at all that you've all fought your way here, but for the four of us in this match it's been a journey that's just that little bit more,” she says, nodding her head slowly. “Let's take Kelcey Wallace, for example. The Perfect 10. She's had a hell of a journey to get here. I mean it wasn't much more than a year ago that nobody here really knew her name. She came in with a moniker like that and I guarantee you everyone thought the same thing. They thought she was just another flash in the pan. They thought she was just another Katie Steward wannabe. They thought she'd be gone before long. Oh how wrong they were. She's had one of the greatest years in SCW history to get here. She's won the Elimination Chamber. She's beaten the monster to become World Champion. She's gotten embroiled in a hell of a mess. She's lost that title. But she's shown passion and commitment and desire as much as anyone else in SCW history to fight her way back, to win Taking Hold of the Flame – the first woman in HISTORY to do that – and to make it to the main event right here. Is there any doubt that Kelcey is one of the most passionate on the roster?”

She shakes her head, implying she believes there isn't. “I know there are a whole lot of you who are particularly focused on Kelcey's story. She has a whole cheering section on Twitter. Guys like William Mason, even Shaun Cruze, are always quick to tell us how incredible she is, that their accomplishments mean nothing if she's not a part of them, or to threaten to riot if she loses. She's not the only one who's shown passion enough to get this far though, because Shaun Cruze has shown his fair share of it as well,” she says, nodding her head as though she's impressed by that. “I mean, a year ago Shaun Cruze was nowhere near where he is today, right? He wasn't a title contender. He wasn't one of those considered at the top of the company. The fact that he's not only fought his way to the World Championship in the last year but that he's had the reign that he has so far, that he's defeated challenger after challenger, that he's been almost unstoppable since the fall, that speaks to the passion of the man. He's had to put in so much work to get to where he is, and he deserves credit for that. It's well established that I don't like him, you don't need to do much research to figure that out, but anyone who's fought their way up the company the way he has, that's overcome the challenges that he has, at the very least deserves my respect. Shaun Cruze is the champion going in to Rise to Greatness for a reason, and it's because when it comes to passion he's not lacking in it either. On Sunday night he's going to fight impossible odds as well, and he'll have to show more passion than anyone to do that.”

“That leaves two more. Two more who've gotten here as a result of their passion. Before I talk about myself though, I want to talk about Jake Starr. You see it's well documented how I feel about Jake Starr as well. This Sunday won't be the first time that we've stepped in to the ring together, and somehow I doubt it'll be the last time either. It's well documented that I don't like him. It's well documented that as a man I have serious questions about his integrity. If there's one thing that I've never doubted with Jake however it's his passion. There has never been any doubt in my mind that Jake Starr is one of the most passionate men I've ever met when it comes to this business. You only need to listen to him speak to get a taste of that as well. You listen to him talk about he talks about how it's taken him six years to get to this point, how much he wants to win this Sunday, how much it means to him, how he'll do anything to make it happen, and I completely believe every word. Jake has shown more passion for this business in the time I've known him than anyone else I've come across. For that, despite the fact that I don't even come close to liking him, I do respect him,” she says before pausing and smiling. “It's crazy as well, isn't it? It's crazy just how much the last year of our careers have had to do with one another. If you told me a year ago that this year I'd have teamed with Jake Starr for four different matches I'd have asked you why I would even have put up with him for one. If you'd told me a year ago that I'd be entering the biggest match of my life this Sunday and that in the build up to it all Jake Starr would be the closest thing I had to an ally I'd have seriously thought you were high.”

She pauses again, nodding her head. “Seriously, the idea that I'd have to rely on someone like Jake to watch my back is insane to me even now, even after everything that's happened, because I know Jake better than anyone else in this match, and in the past whenever I've turned my back to him he's picked up a steel chair and swung it at me,” she says, laughing. “I still remember the night that actually happened as well. It was getting close to two years ago now. You remember, don't you Jake? It was the first show after Rise to Greatness two years ago that I won a tournament that both of us were involved in. On one night I beat three World Champions, including the man who beat you, and after Shilo got hurt they named me as his replacement. You didn't like that. You didn't see it coming. Hell, none of us saw it coming, not even me. But it was you who took the biggest exception to it. You thought it should have been you. It didn't matter that you were eliminated in the first round of the tournament; you still believed it should have been you. To show that displeasure you didn't do what Lucas Knight did, you didn't walk out to the ring and challenge me, instead you took a steel chair and when I wasn't looking, when I was focused on Lucas, you swung that chair and you hit me in the back. I've not forgotten. I've not forgiven. I'll give you credit for showing passion that night, I'll give you credit for making a statement, but that night just proved to me the kind of man you really are. You attacked a woman from behind with a chair. If I didn't hate you enough before that night I most certainly hated you after it.”

“Do you remember any of that Jake?” she asks, tilting her head a little as though she's genuinely asking. “I know most people would. That's not exactly something that's easy for most people to forget. But you're not most people, are you? Truth is that sometimes I'm not even sure that you live in the same world as the rest of us. The things that seem to happen in the world you live in don't happen in the world that we do. I can name countless examples of the delusions you've expressed over the years, these insane ideas you've gotten in your head that you're utterly convinced are true despite the fact that there are mountains of evidence to the contrary. I mean how long did you blame me for an attack on you that I had absolutely no part in? How many years did you hold me responsible for something that I didn't even actually do? You used that to justify all the horrible things you did to me, all the horrible things you said about me, and the whole time it was something that never even happened. So, do you remember that night Jake? I do. And do you remember the night that you beat me to retain the World title? I do. That was the night that your wife hit me from behind, and then you did, in order to lay me out and retain your title. I've never forgotten that either, and despite everything we've been through I'll never forgive that. You see you were meant to be the hero. You were meant to be the one above that. You accused me so many times of unspeakable things, of cheating, of lying, and in the end that one and only time we've clashed over the World title it was you who had to cheat.”

She takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly. “Despite my personal feelings, despite the fact that I felt robbed, despite the fact that I almost suffered a nervous breakdown after that match, I can't deny that that night showed me once again just how much passion you possessed for the World Heavyweight Championship. You've done a lot of other things in your career so far, you've had so many other chances, you've proven yourself as a Supreme Champion as well, something that very few can claim, but your main passion wasn't ever to be Adrenaline Champion, or United States Champion, or Tag Team Champion. Your primary goal, the thing you've always been most passionate about, is the World Heavyweight Championship, isn't it? And now you've got your dream. Now you've got your opportunity. You said this was what you've worked for over the last six years, you said this is what you've dreamt about, you said this is the one thing you feel like you've not accomplished – the main event of Rise to Greatness, for the World title – and you said that you felt that your career wouldn't be complete without this. Well you've got it. You've got your wish. Your dream is about to come true. But Jake, this dream doesn't end like others have before. This dream doesn't end with you raising the title high. This dream doesn't end with you on top of the world. You know that, right?” she asks curiously. “If anyone had told me a year ago that I'd have been working with you, that you'd have been watching my back, I'd have thought they were insane, but it happened. We've come here together. We won this opportunity together. We've made it this far together. But on Sunday we're no longer together.”

“You're a hell of a competitor Jake. You're one of the most passionate men I've ever met in my life. I've spoken about your accomplishments, and on top of that achievement of being a Supreme Champion you're also a three time SCW World Champion. Those are accomplishments which are impossible to overlook. That's a career that's impossible not to have the utmost respect for. And I do want to thank you. Before all of this begins I do want to thank you. When they threatened to take us out we made a pact, and you've done your best to honour that. You had my back when I was attacked by Silas World and Shaun Cruze. Without you I likely wouldn't be here today. For that I want to thank you. But I also want you to know I'm not going to have any problem ending that pact on Sunday. Even now you run your mouth about me, you mock me, you make fun of me, and you disrespect me. After everything we've been through together you still behave that way. You still disrespect me. And it's in that regard I know that you're never going to change,” she says, shaking her head slowly. “I have changed though Jake. I'm not the same person I was when we met for the World title. I'm not the same person I was when we met inside the Thunderdome. I'm not the same girl you've fought before, but you'll always be the same old Jake Starr. That's why I wanted to take this trip down memory lane with you today. That's why I wanted to reminisce about the old times. But the time for reminiscing is over. This Sunday isn't about the old times, it isn't about old memories, this Sunday is about making new ones!”

“You'll always be the same old Jake Starr,” she repeats again before letting out a sigh. “And even though you had my back when I needed you, even though you saved me from having Shaun put me on the shelf for more than just a few live events, when I needed you to stand with me and fight in the ring you proved that you'll always be the same old Jake Starr. You didn't stand with me. You didn't fight with me. You didn't choose to prove yourself in the ring like I did, instead you left that to Tommy Valentine and Simon Lyman, and the same old Jake Starr did what the same old Jake Starr always does – attacked a woman from behind with a chair. And this Sunday I know what you're capable of. This Sunday I know the depths you'll go to. This Sunday I know you won't let anything stop you. You've used chairs before. You've used your wife before. You've used every trick in the book before, and this Sunday, unlike before, it's not even illegal. This Sunday you can bring the chairs. This Sunday you can do anything you want. This Sunday, under Fatal Fourway rules, there's no disqualification. And the reason that we went down memory lane Jake is to remind you that I know you better than anyone else in this match, I know everything you're capable of, and I'm going to be prepared. Your tricks may work on Kelcey Wallace. You may be able to blindside Shaun Cruze. But I know you Jake. We've walked this road together. We've gotten to this point together. And I know what this means to you. I know what this opportunity means to you. On Sunday it's everyone for themselves. And while this may be your dream Jake, on Sunday I intend to end that dream.”

She pauses for a moment before smiling at the camera. “You see it's passion that's all important in this business, and it's passion that I have more than anyone else. When I lost the World Heavyweight Championship a year ago there were so many different things I could have done, but I gritted my teeth, I picked myself up and I've been fighting every moment since to get back what I lost. There have been no betrayals. There's been no backstabbing. There's been no Infamous or Pinnacle either. This year I've stood tall, stood proud and stood alone and that's been hard. I've been knocked down. I've been betrayed. I've had friends turn on me and loved ones break my heart. I've been attacked from behind my attention seekers and by vindictive, evil monsters. I was almost broken in half in the Elimination Chamber, I was left for busted open in a First Blood match, I was left for dead inside the Thunderdome, and I never gave up. That's been my defining characteristic over the last year, that no matter what was put in front of me and no matter what people tried to do to me I've NEVER GIVEN UP,” she says proudly. “It's been passion that's driven me, a passion for this business, a passion for the fans, a passion to steal the show and prove how good I am, and a passion to become a three time World Champion. And I've not locked myself away in an ivory tower, I've not looked down my nose at the world, I've been in the middle of it all this whole time, fighting every challenge, overcoming every obstacle, never backing down, never giving up! It's been passion that's defined my year, and it'll be passion that defines me on Sunday.”

She nods her head proudly. “I've made a lot of changes over the past year. I know a lot of people say the same thing, so maybe I'm not unique in that context, but when I think back to where I was – to who I was – a year ago then I’m not proud of the person I was then, but I am proud of who I am now. One year ago at Rise to Greatness I suffered the most soul-destroying loss of my life, but I didn’t let it break me. I’m back. I’m stronger. I’m tougher. I’m more determined than I’ve ever been. And in just a few days time I’ll be stepping in to the ring at Rise to Greatness for the fifth time. Jake likes to make a point of telling the world he’s never lost at Rise to Greatness. I was the same last year. He’s right, when you lose that it’s gone forever. But when you lose that – and I know from experience – it only makes you more determined to go back and make sure it NEVER happens again. I have the passion. I know I’ll need more than just passion, but when you’ve got passion driving you, you’re already part of the way there,” she says with another smile. “It’ll be three hundred and sixty four days after I lost the World Heavyweight Championship that I step in to the ring on Sunday and I fight for it again. Three hundred and sixty four days of longing. Three hundred and sixty four days of wanting. Three hundred and sixty four days of believing. And three hundred and sixty four days of passion! I can’t make any guarantees. I can’t stand here and tell you that there’s GOING to be a new World Heavyweight Champion, and even if I could then I couldn’t tell you that it’s GOING to be me. I can’t see the future. But I have hope it will be. And if it is then there will be three people where I was last year. There will be three people broken. There will be three people who have to start their fights all over again. They all have the passion. I have more. So if it’s me on Sunday, you know what to do. JUST BE JEALOUS!”

She nods at the camera once more before the video ends and the replay button flashes up on the screen.

037: Passion Is Key

Posted By: Zoe Sperling
Date Posted: 24th July 2014

There is nothing in this business that drives a competitor more than passion. None of us would do the things we did if we didn't have it. I'm not about to stand around and tell you that none of my opponents have passion going in to this Sunday, they all do. I want you to know just how much it drives me though.
