The video begins and we see a Mexican flag flying in the wind. The camera stays tightly focused on the Mexican flag and we hear a voice from behind the camera, a voice we recognise as that of Zoe Sperling, better known to the wrestling world as Syren. “I’ve always been a proud American, and as such I’ve always had a strong respect for what our flag means and everything it stands for,” she says, still focusing the camera on the Mexican flag. “I think everyone is the same when it comes to their country, right? Because the flag is a symbol of who you are. It’s a symbol of what your country represents. It’s a matter of national pride. And nothing represents a nation more than a flag. When I saw this one it got me thinking about all of that. It got me thinking about being here in Mexico, and in fact all the different countries that we’ve toured too lately. And I’ve been proud to go to those countries. I’ve been proud to do my part to represent FFW. I’ve been proud to meet people, to talk to different fans, to understand what the company – what wrestling as a whole – means to them and to their culture, and I’ve heard some fantastic stories. I heard some truly incredible and inspirational stories in Japan. But the stories I’ve heard here in Mexico are unlike anything else, because wrestling isn’t just a sport down here, it’s so much more than that. Wrestling is part of the culture for so many of these fans. It’s part of their way of life. It takes on such huge meaning, and they get so excited to witness some of the incredibly talented competitors they’re going to see when FFW invades the Arena Mexico tonight.”
She zooms the camera out and turns it around on herself. We see that she’s standing on a rooftop. The building she’s standing on top of doesn’t appear that large, but it’s clearly a rooftop that she’s standing on. “Hearing those fans talk about what wrestling means to them made me think about what wrestling means to me as well. I mean sure, it’s my job. I get paid to do this. But I don’t think anyone who commits themselves to this sport, who travels the kinds of schedules that we all travel, who take on the workload that we take on, does that just for money. I think those who do are probably weeded out pretty early on. I mean I know you guys know about the tours we go on, but let me tell you a little about a day in the life of a wrestler, especially a female wrestler. You wake up and you get out of bed and you stretch yourself out, because chances are good your body aches in all kinds of places from the hardships it’s been through when you first wake up. You eat a healthy breakfast, because if you decide to binge or eat something unhealthy and you put on even as much as a couple of pounds the ENTIRE WORLD gets to see it on television and you can guarantee they’ll be tweeting about it, and that’s NOT a good feeling to have people who don’t even know you question if you’re putting on weight just because you felt the need to eat go a little crazy once or twice. Then, when you’re done with breakfast, you go to the gym and you train,” she says before laughing a little. “You do that a lot. And if you want to be successful, if you want to be one of the best, then that becomes your life.”
“When you’re done with the gym you get lunch, then if you’re on tour it normally means you do interviews, you talk to producers, you talk to trainers, you get ready for the night ahead, and when you’ve done all that then you just about get time to get something for dinner before you’ve got a deadline to meet and you’ve got to be at the arena where you’re stretching out, getting ready for your match... and that happens pretty much every day that you’re competing,” she says before beginning to laugh. “You can’t do that, you can’t go through that kind of lifestyle, if it’s just about the money. You need something else. You need passion. You need desire. You need to want to prove yourself to the entire world. And when you’re like that then this business isn’t a job to you, it’s your life. So when I tell you right now that professional wrestling has been my entire life over the last five years, you know exactly what I’m talking about. And it has. Five years of my life I’ve dedicated to it. Five years of my life I’ve dedicated to training, to learning, to making myself better at every opportunity, to experiencing the biggest moments, to asking questions of the very best in the business just to hope that I could get a little bit better... for five years I’ve brought the passion and the desire that you need to have to get to the top of this business, and I know that I’m not there yet, I know that I’m not the biggest name on the planet, but I want to be and I’m willing to keep working until I get that. And one thing I’ve found out is that these people in Mexico understand that in ways a lot of other fans don’t. They respect that, because to them this is their life too!”
“I’m excited to compete tonight. I’m excited to compete in this country. I love these fans. I love their passion. I love their excitement. I love their energy. And I thought about all of that when I saw that flag flying in the wind, and then I thought about other things. I thought about other symbols. I thought about the t-shirts I wear with the heart logos and what they mean. And just like those flags represent countries, those logos represent me. And the name Dark Fantasy represents something as well. It represents the commitment that three women have to this sport, Ravyn Taylor, Autumn Valentine, and Syren. But for the most part the name Dark Fantasy represents just two of them more than the other. It represents Ravyn Taylor and me. It represents everything that we’re about. It represents everything that we’ve put in to this business. It represents what we stand for. It represents our desires, our dreams...” she says, trailing off before beginning to smile. “Tonight, for the very first time in FFW, Ravyn Taylor and me are united under that name. Tonight, for the very first time, the FFW audience find out about us as a duo, us as a unit, us as a team. And tonight the pressure is on us in a big way, because tonight we both want to do that name and our legacies justice. I see that flag flying and I think about everyone who’s ever stood in front of it and thought about what it represents to them, and I think about tonight and we may not have a flag to fly but we do have something to represent, something that means the world to us. And we want to do it proud.”
“Over the last few weeks there’s been a lot of talk about what happened the last time I competed in front of an FFW crowd. There’s been a lot of talk about the match that Maddie, Ravyn and me had against the Shades of the Sun. There’s been a lot of talk about the ending of that match, about what that match means, and tonight that continues on. It continued on at Velocity as well. Ravyn Taylor look on Alysson Gardner in a hell of a match, and one that was won by the Infamous but not in a way that I’m particularly proud of. There’s been a lot of talk about that as well. You see I’m a very passionate person, I’m a very committed person and I’m a very loyal person, so I’m not going to stand here right now and condemn everything that happened, but I’m also not going to stand here right now and praise it either. What I am going to do is I’m going to talk about it a little, and I know that Alysson is probably going to get her panties all up in a bunch again because here I am ‘whining’ again, but maybe if she shuts her mouth for a moment and just listens to what I’ve got to say then she’ll get a better understanding of me, because right now I can go on the record and say one thing Alysson Gardner does NOT have is an understanding of me,” she says, shaking her head slowly. “She thinks she does. She thinks she’s got me figured out. She thinks I’m a hypocrite. She thinks I’m evil. She thinks I’ve got double standards. She’s absolutely certain in her beliefs about me. But the sad part is that like so many before her Alysson made all these judgements without ever bothering to get to know me even a little bit first.”
“Now I’m not going to pretend that I know everything about her because I don’t. I don’t know her personally. I’d like to have gotten the chance to get to know her, but I guess that ship sailed a long time ago when she decided that I was Maddie McTaggert’s sidekick, that I was ‘evil’ and everything else, huh? What Alysson needs to know though is that these things that she thinks she knows about me, this person she’s got me pegged as, that’s not me. That’s her opinion of me. That’s this fictional caricature she’s created of me. Now that’s fine. If she wants to believe the things she believes then I’m not going to stop her. My problem with her however is that she wants everyone else to believe it too! Now I work damn hard. I train damn hard. And I am absolutely committed to everything that I say. I don’t cheat. I don’t attack people from behind. I don’t use weapons. I don’t use underhanded tactics. I wrestle. I fight. I represent myself in the best way I know how. And I always do that. That’s who I am. But I also don’t judge. And this is the big thing, and the thing that’s got me a little upset right now, because ALL I hear from Alysson Gardner, and now from Gabrielle Crimson as well, is judgement,” she says in an angry tone. “They stand there and they tell me the way that they think I should be. They tell me that I’m not good enough, that I cry too much, and they tell me that my friends are rotten and nasty and that means I am too. But who the hell are these two self-righteous little bitches to tell me this? What gives them the right to judge me?”
“Now I was raised Jewish, so if my dad actually hears me saying this he’s probably going to flip out, but in this moment I can’t help but think of a verse that we’ve ALL heard before. ‘Let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone’. ‘Let he who is without sin cast the first stone’. Whatever translation you want to take, the quote remains the same. It’s about it’s about not judging people. It’s about not looking down your nose at people when you yourself are far from perfect. And yet the wrestling business is FILLED with people who ignore that very vital piece of advice. ‘Judge not lest ye be judged’ is another one. Yet here I stand, judged. Yet here I stand, criticised. Yet here I stand told I’m inferior, told I’m evil, told that I’m a hypocrite, told all these things by two spiteful little bitches who’ve been throwing stones for way too fucking long. And yet I’ve not stooped to their level. I’ve not condemned them. I’ve not judged them. In fact despite ALL of this I still RESPECT them both,” she says, the same angry, frustrated tone coming through. “Because THAT is what I’m about ladies. I’m about RESPECT! I’m about COMPETITION! I go out to that ring and I fight. And I know you two are the same. I know that you both love to compete. You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t love to compete. But just because you do love it, just because you believe in certain things, that doesn’t make you BETTER than me. And that’s what you don’t get, because that’s what you think you are, right? You know better than me. You’re more righteous than me. Your friends wouldn’t ever do the things my friends would do, so you’re better than me.”
“Bullshit,” she says angrily. “That’s all this is. And tell me girls, what good has all the spite done you? What good as all the hatred done you? What good has all the DISRESPECT done you? Does it make you feel morally superior to me? Does it make you feel big and bad to look down your nose and tell us that we’re ‘Maddie McTaggert wannabes’ over and over and over and over? Does it make you feel proud to think you know everything about us? You’ve put yourself up on a pedestal, you’ve been riding that high horse of yours around for weeks now, and all you’re doing is raising yourselves up and up and up and up, until someone is going to come along and pull that pedestal out from under you, knock you screaming off that high horse of yours and watch you fall all the way to the ground. And this week girls that person is going to be me! Because you had a chance to do things differently but you didn’t take it. You had a chance to show RESPECT and you didn’t take it. You were upset about losing before, I can respect that. I mean hell, we all know that I don’t like to lose, don’t we? We all know that I’ll do whatever I can in this business to win. So I can respect the fact that you were upset about the loss, but you know what you could have done? You could have just nodded your head and promised the world that next time would be different. But you didn’t. Instead you’ve gone out of your way to talk down to me. You’ve gone out of your way to criticise me at every level. You’ve gone out of your way to insult my friends, insult my legacy and disrespect everything I care about and you’ve made it a little bit personal.”
“I don’t like when things get personal. I don’t like going to that place. This business is about competition, it’s about showing whose better in the ring, and yah, it’s not always fair but you go in to it knowing that in advance, but yet all I’ve heard for two fucking weeks is how Alysson Gardner is going to prove she’s WORSE than the people she hates, because apparently that’s a good thing?” she says, shaking her head slowly. “All I’ve heard for two weeks is how they’re better in every possible way. They’re better human beings, they’re better wrestlers, they’re a better tag team, they’re a better Trios team, they’re better friends, they’re better partners, they’re better lovers, they’re better representatives of this company... they’re better in EVERY possible way, right? Well tonight, in that ring, let’s put that to the test. Tonight, in that ring, let’s find out which one of these teams IS better! Tonight, in front of a sold out Arena Mexico, let’s tear the house down, let’s go to war, let’s put EVERYTHING on the line and let’s find out which team IS better and I can guarantee you one thing and it’s not that Dark Fantasy is morally, athletically or intellectually superior but it’s that in front of those fans Ravyn Taylor and Syren are going to give EVERYTHING THEY HAVE to shut your arrogant, self-righteous mouths and give you something new to think about because I’m tired of this. I’m tired of YOU. I’m tired of the same bullshit, I’m tired of the same excuses, I’m tired of the same old lines, and I’m tired of being told that you think you know me when neither one of you knows a damn thing!”
She lets out a long sigh, shaking her head slowly. “I’m playing with fire, right? I’m up against the Shades of the Sun and you’re out to eclipse me. I’m facing the Rocking Kittens and I’m going to get rocked, right? Funny words, but that’s all they are because that’s all you’ve got. Your problem right now is that you think that we think that we’re unbeatable, but nothing could be further from the truth. I know I’m not unbeatable. If I thought that even for a moment I won’t have gone to the gym this morning to get ready for this match. If I thought that for even a moment then I wouldn’t have been up half the night last night talking strategy with Ravyn and yah, I wouldn’t have been making her make me a promise. And that promise wasn’t to be good. That promise wasn’t to behave. That promise was that the two of us are going to beat you and wipe the arrogant, self-righteous looks off your faces,” she says before shaking her head again. “You think you’re so special, don’t you? You think you’re in the right. You think you’ve got the answers. You don’t even know the questions! I’ve seen your kind so many times before. You’re the kind who judges every flaw. You’re the kind who picks apart every blemish. You’re the fucking cheerleading squad, telling everyone else what’s wrong with them without ever looking in a mirror. And I’m tired of it. Ravyn may want to play with your heads, she may want to you to look one way so she can hit you from the other side, but me? I’m just going to straight up come at you and see what you can handle. I’m just going to FIGHT you both, and see where that takes me.”
“But while I may not agree with my tag team partner in everything she says, and I may not agree with her tactics at every turn, I do agree with one thing. You do have something that we want. You have a spot. You’re one of the best tag teams in FFW. You’re the current reigning Trios Champions, and you might possibly become the new FFW Unity Tag Team Champions as well. And we want that. And right now you’re flying high, holding those titles up at every opportunity, showing them off to the world, rubbing them in the faces of everybody else, but one day it’s going to be us standing on the other side of the ring to you two when those titles are on the line, and when that day comes we’re going to take them from you and all the preaching won’t make a damn bit of difference then,” she says before laughing. “You know in spite of everything I do respect you both. You’re both former singles champions, you’re two thirds of the current reigning FFW Trios Champions and you’re possibly the next Unity Tag Team Champions. You’ve got a legacy. You’ve got a reputation. You’re incredible competitors. You’re tough, you’re determined, you’re amazingly talented. But you’re so arrogant, presumptuous, pretentious and you think you’ve got it all figured out. You’re two top competitors, you’re two CHAMPIONS and yet you treat Ravyn and me like we mean nothing. The first time we met you didn’t even know enough about us to think that we wouldn’t even get along. This time you still think you’re that much better than us. Tonight on Breaking Point I intend to show the world what we’re about because quite frankly ladies I’m tired of being told I’m not good enough. And tonight, if Dark Fantasy leaves that ring victorious, if Dark Fantasy are the ones with our arms raised, if we get what WE want there’s something that I want from both of you. I want you to think about everything you’ve had to say, every moment you’ve disrespected us, and I want you to BE TOTALLY JEALOUS!”
There’s anger in her voice again at the end before she just shakes her head again and shuts off the camera. The video ends and the replay button flashes up on the screen.
