The video begins on a close-up on a monitor. There’s a match playing on the monitor but the sound is muted. The match playing looks pretty old, and even has the older SCW Home Media logo in the corner. We watch the match for a few seconds and we see in the ring are Shilo Valiant, James Marsh-Asher and Syren. As the match continues we hear a sigh from behind the camera and begin to hear the familiar voice of the SCW World Champion talking. “You’re probably wondering why THIS match, right?” she asks softly. “Do you all remember it? This was my first Fatal Four-Way match at the top of the show. This was the biggest night of my career up to that point. And in shot right now you can see two people who entered this match claiming to be the SCW World Champion, Shilo Valiant and me. Neither of us left that night with the title. He walked in as the disputed World Champion, a man who’s only appearances in the month’s prior had been to mess with me, cost me matches and ruin every good moment I tried to get. I walked in as the Interim World Champion, a title I proudly won by winning the number one contendership to Shilo before an accident with the pyro almost ended his career. Did we ever find out what happened with that? Doesn’t matter now, I guess. But going into that night all the focus was on Shilo and me, but it wasn’t either of us who won. It was him. It was Thirteen. It was James Marsh-Asher. And do you know why he was in that match to begin with? Yah, that’s why I’m watching this. He was in that match because of me.”

She laughs a little. “A lot of people criticised me for the decision I made in the build-up to that night. Shilo definitely did. He’d messed with me for months. He’d attacked me every chance he got. He ruined moments for me. He cost me weeks out hurt. Then he came back and he wanted one on one, in spite the fact that I’d only beaten Christian Savior and Thirteen previously BECAUSE of his interference, and I had in my hand my first Trios Contract and I said no. I said that I didn’t want to make it one on one. I told him that both those guys deserved a chance, James especially, because I wanted the match to be as big as possible and I knew, thanks to Shilo, that if I left that night having beaten him one on one, or if he left that night having beaten me one on one, there would still be doubt over who the champion should be. I didn’t want that. So, my first ever Trios Tournament cash in was to make a one on one match into a Fatal Four-Way match and… well, people afterwards told me that I cost myself the World title by doing that,” she says before laughing again. “I faced a lot of criticism after that night. And I did feel really down as well. I mean, I could have done things differently, right? I could have asked for a different match. I could have done some ludicrous match like… putting Shilo in a sack or in bra and panties? But I didn’t do that. I made the match a Fatal Four-Way match and I went out there and I tried to win it. I lost. And people told me that it was my own fault. They asked me if I could go back in time what would I do differently. And do you know what I’d do differently?”

She turns the camera around and points it at herself. “Not a goddamn thing,” she says with an honest smile on her face. She then takes the camera and places it down on its stand before stepping away from it and nodding at it proudly. “Now you don’t have to believe me if you don’t want to. You can think I’m lying to you. But that’s the honest truth. If I could go back in time and change the match and use that contract to give myself ANY advantage, to make it ANY kind of match, to have Shilo fight with both arms tied behind his back or something insane like that I wouldn’t. I’d do it all again. That’s because in the build-up to that match I made the RIGHT choice. Because that’s what I’ve always been about. Whether people loved me or hated me they had no choice my entire career but to see that I’ve always wanted the BIGGEST matches. I’ve always gone after the BIGGEST challenges. And EVERY TIME I’ve had the World title on my shoulder I’ve not been about preserving my title reign by any means necessary, or lying, or trying to steal a few more seconds to add to my fifteen minutes in the spotlight. Every time I’ve had the World Heavyweight Championship on my shoulder I’ve gone out in front of you people every single chance I’ve gotten to prove beyond doubt that it BELONGED there, to prove beyond doubt that when I say that I am the BEST FEMALE WRESTLER IN THE WORLD then it’s not just a slogan for the cameras but a mantra I try to live up to every single time I compete.”

“I did that back then. I used my first ever Trios Contract to book myself in an impossible challenge, reducing my odds and telling the statistics to be damned and I know what happened. James Marsh-Asher choked me out. I passed out to the pain and he walked out with the undisputed World Championship. And he deserved it. I worked my ass off after that and I won that belt again, and again, and again, and again…” she says before reaching for the controller for the TV and either stopping the video or pausing it while also grabbing hold of the SCW World Championship, holding it up to the camera with a look of pride in her face as she does so. “And I’m DAMN proud of everything I’ve accomplished. I’m DAMN proud to be able to stand here as the SCW World Champion. But I’m even prouder that this Sunday I’m going into Hell Hath No Fury to defend this championship and once again, just like before, I didn’t look at the easiest option. I could have. There was talk in the back about who the next challenger would be, and whether or not I’d accept a challenge if Alexis Quinne threw it out there after what she did to me. We’ll get to that though. For now the story isn’t Alexis, the story is that conversation in the back and the options in front of me. How many champions do you know who would have stomped their feet and puffed out their cheeks and said ‘someone like Alexis’ didn’t even deserve a shot? The number’s pretty high, right? How many would have accepted the challenge laid out by her? A few. I’d need at least two hands to count them all. But how many people would have added two more people to the match?”

She shrugs her shoulders and smiles. “Yah, that’s what I thought too. ‘Nobody in their right mind’ would do that, right? Ask Winters. Ask Knots. They’ll tell you. ‘Nobody in their right mind’ would lessen their own chances. ‘Nobody in their right mind’ would lessen their chances to win from fifty percent WITH champions advantage to twenty-five percent WITHOUT it. ‘Nobody in their right mind’ would willingly put themselves in a position where they don’t need to be pinned, they don’t need to be submitted, and they don’t even need to be in the ring when the match ends to lose their title. You look around this business – not just this company but this business as a whole – and you find a thousand champions at all levels put in situations like this complaining about how unfair it is, how the odds are against them, how they should have things their own way, and then you come to SCW, to the very top of the card, and you find not only a champion who doesn’t complain about being put in that situation but ASKS for it, and when you ask her why she tells you straight,” she says with a grin. “Maybe I’m not ‘in my right mind’. Or maybe I’m a FIGHTER. Maybe I’m a CHAMPION. And maybe that word still MEANS something to me! Because this Sunday night I’ve gone all in, baby. This Sunday night I face the biggest challenge of my title reign so far. This Sunday night I go up against one of the fastest rising stars in this business and TWO former World Champions in a Fatal Four-Way match of my own making with THIS title on the line… and that’s where I’m going to prove that THIS isn’t just a damn slogan.”

She pulls on her shirt, which is a pink shirt with a heart logo in the middle and around it is the words ‘Best Female Wrestler In The World’. “I wanted the biggest challenge in the biggest match. I wanted the biggest chance to prove myself worthy of this title, and to give all you guys something I know you want to see. And more importantly than that I wanted to give out opportunities. That’s what I’m all about. I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again. I duck. I don’t hide. You’ve got a problem with me? Cool, let’s get in the ring and settle it! And you want to act like Alexis Quinne acts, going around and using her ‘gang’ to do her dirty work, putting people on the injured list, attacking others, jumping me and my friend after we’ve already had a match AND been jumped by two OTHER bitches before that then you need to learn that that kind of stuff doesn’t go down well with me,” she says with a determined look on her face. “And I promised I’d get to talking about Supreme Saturday, right? Well, here we are. The fact is there’s a lot of pressure on me right now. I’ve got kids at home for the first time and I’m having a hard time balancing that with everything else. I’ve got this shiny, shiny belt on my shoulder that I NEVER want to give up. And I’ve still got a life, I’ve still got commitments to promoting SCW, to getting people watching, to talking about the company on radio and television but more than that as well, I’m even helping promote a charity right now on top of everything! The pressure on my shoulders is CRAZY! And some nights it all get so much that I feel like I’m going to get crushed under it. Then someone like Alexis comes along and reminds me why I do this.”

“Supreme Saturday didn’t go the way I planned. I planned to fight Gable Winchester. That didn’t happen. Gable didn’t even make it to the arena. But the fans were promised a show, they were promised a World title match, and I had to think on my feet. I gave them what they paid to see. Autumn Valentine and me gave them what they paid to see. Like I’ve said before I’m about opportunity and she’s MORE than earned a shot at the title considering everything she’s done in the tag team division, does anyone want to tell me I’m wrong? No? Didn’t think so. So, Autumn and me go out there and we give each other EVERYTHING we have before the Daughters of Doucheness come down to interrupt. That wasn’t how I wanted that match to end. That wasn’t how it SHOULD have ended. But no sooner do we get rid of them that out comes Alexis Quinne and Punk Hazard to pick the bones of both of us, to attack us both, and to ‘make a statement’. And yah Alexis, I heard your statement. You want to know what I heard? I heard you’re a little BITCH,” she says sternly. “That’s what I heard that night, girl. I didn’t hear dominance. I didn’t hear deserving. I didn’t hear a woman PROVING what she can do. I heard a little bitch attacking me while I was already hurt, laying me out, hammering away at my head, and trying to INJURE me so she can brag about it on Breakdown. Was that the plan? Knock me down and then tell everyone how tough you are? Challenge me to a match after you’ve already done the damage? Well what goes around comes around, bitch.”

She smirks at the camera and places the World title on her shoulder. “You want a shot at this belt? You didn’t need to jump me, Alexis. You didn’t need to bring your cronies. All you had to do was ask. The fact is I’m a fighting champion. You ask for a shot at me, you’re damn right I would have given you one because before last Saturday, no matter what I think about you personally, there’s no denying that PROFESSIONALLY you’re a star on the rise and the fact that you’ve NEVER gotten a shot at this belt, the fact that you’ve NEVER competed for it in spite of how close you’ve come, needed to change. If you’d gone out to that ring and you’d issued a challenge and you’d reminded the world of everything you’ve done and you’d asked me to come out there and give you a chance I would have, girl. But that’s not what you did. Instead you attacked me. Instead you had your friends attack me. You went after Autumn when she’d already been hurt. And you put me in the medical room yet again. Well, you got your cheap shots in girl, do you want to find out if you can do that again in the middle of the ring when I’m looking you in your beady little eyes?” she asks with pride and passion in her voice. “We’ve been here before after all. You gave me a HELL of a fight. Now you’re better. I’m better. And I damn sure want to know which one of us IS better. But if you thought I was going to give you EVERYTHING your little heart desired after the bullshit you’ve pulled then you’re wrong, girl. That isn’t the way it’s supposed to be. Now maybe there are people around here who can do whatever they want with no consequences, maybe that’s what works for them, but I’ve always liked the idea of karma. It’s a beautiful idea. And when it comes for you, you know it.”

She nods her head fiercely. “What, did you think you could just do whatever you wanted and run away? Did you think as long as you stayed two steps ahead nobody would catch up to you? Yah, you did. You thought you could take out Dawn Lohan and when she came back she’d be too focused on other things to care about you, right? That or you deluded yourself into believing you could ‘move past’ her. And Tommy? I love Tommy. I train with Tommy. Believe me, Alexis, if you were going to pick ONE person to try to make your name off BEFORE coming after me it should have been just about ANYONE besides him. And now look at the position you’re in. You’ve got enemies surrounding you at all sides. Tommy wants a shot at you. Dawn wants a shot at you. I want a shot at you. And this Sunday we’re ALL going to get what we want,” she says with excitement before sliding the title off her shoulder again. “You get to come after me. You get a shot at THIS. And it’s LONG overdue. But you want me then I’m going to make you work for it, girl. You don’t do that to good people without consequences. This isn’t YOUR playground and I don’t give a damn HOW many friends you’ve got in that Punk Hazard extended family of yours to come after us with because this Sunday if you want a war then girl I can promise you’ll get one. You want to bring your friends? We’ll bring ours. When it comes to it’s inevitable conclusion I can promise you that it WON’T be Alexis Quinne bullying her way to what she wants and making a name for herself because one by one we’ll take out every single person you can throw at us until it’s just you and everyone you’ve done wrong by…”

“How do you imagine that’s going to end, Alexis? How do you imagine your moment of glory is going to end? Well, if you want know what history teaches us then it’s kind of funny because you should go look it up. You know that match I was talking about earlier, the Fatal Four-Way match for the World title, the one I got choked out to lose… well back then I was where you are. I thought I had a plan. I thought I had the numbers in my favour. I thought with no disqualification it gave me every opportunity I needed. You know how it actually ended. Do you really think it’s going to end differently for you? Do you really think that you can cheat and con your way to taking this title home? Do you really think that THAT’S how you get to call yourself the best? Sorry sweetie, that’s not the way it works. You want to take this title from me? You’re going to have to earn it. You’re going to have to face up against every crime you’ve committed on your way to this moment and you’re going to find out, face to face with three people who KNOW what it takes, what it means to EARN that title… and do you want to know the truth about how I feel about you, sweetie?” she asks before shaking her head. “I know you’re good. I know you’re one of the best this company has right now. And I know you’re getting better every time you’re in that ring. But I also know you’re brash. You’re self-absorbed. And simple put, sweetie, you’re not ready yet. And this Sunday, Fatal Four-Way rules, maybe it’ll be me lying on that mat holding my head while you stand over me with that title and prove me wrong, but maybe it’ll be me STANDING TALL yet again and if it is, sweetie, then tell me will everything you’ve done really have been worth it?”

She pauses for a long moment before looking at the title again and slowly putting it back on her shoulder. “That’s not just a question I’ve got to ask you either. It’s a question I’ve been wanting to ask Dawn Lohan for a while now as well. Was it worth it? Was it worth the price you paid? Was it worth the enemies you made? Was it worth the respect you lost? I know a little something about respect. It’s damn hard to earn but it’s so easy to lose. And Dawn and me, we both know a little something about losing it, don’t we? Now why I wanted to put Alexis in this position, why I wanted to give her this chance but also give the two of YOU a chance as well, is pretty obvious. That’s been super easy to answer every time anyone has asked me about it. But this morning I was doing a local radio show and the presenter asked me why I’d give you the chance. He didn’t understand. He pointed out that we’re not friends. I agreed. He pointed out that we’ve never been that close. I agreed with that as well. And he reminded me of a few things from your past, things that I felt uncomfortable being reminded of. You can guess what they were, right? The words he used were that she ‘sold her soul’ for a little success and he wanted to know how I felt about that,” she says before letting out a long sigh. “The truth is I found it difficult to answer. I found it difficult because the fact is that I want to like you, Dawn. Personally, I wish I could call you a friend. But I can’t and the reason I can’t is simple: I don’t trust you.”

She lets out a sigh. “I mean there’s no denying your ability. There’s no denying your talent. That’s been evident since day one. There was a reason that you were tag team champion. There was a reason that you were United States Champion. There was a reason that you were Women’s Champion. There was even a reason you were World Champion. That reason is you’ve got the talent. You always had it. We were trained by the same woman after all, right? She saw that talent in me and I know she saw it in you as well. But being a champion is about more than wearing a title. It’s about more than a few tweets about how wonderful everything is, even when those tweets are about me. Being a champion is about thinking about more than just yourself. Being a champion is about being a role model. It’s about showing up first and going home last. It’s about going above and beyond. You can wear a title and you can be a title holder without being a real CHAMPION, and that’s something Ivy taught me a long time ago. I have no doubt she said the same thing to you. So, let me ask you honestly, Dawn: what kind of champion have you been? And I’m not looking to dig up ancient history. I’m not just talking about covering people in blood and hanging on the every word of a LUNATIC and then turning around and deciding everything is ‘wonderful’ again like someone found your factory reset button and managed to get rid of the psycho-virus that was messing you up. I mean way more than that. I mean… you attacking Ravyn when she was meant to be your partner. Remember that? I do. When someone attacks the people I love I find it hard to forget.”

“You didn’t trust Ravyn when all the evidence said she was innocent. You wouldn’t believe it though. You were so sure that SHE was the bad one in spite of the fact that, I mean hello, only a few months earlier you were LITERALLY BATHING IN BLOOD IN THE RING! Yet you wanted everyone to give YOU the benefit of the doubt when you turned over a new leaf, but you couldn’t do the same for someone else? Not only could you not give her the benefit of the doubt, you attacked her when she was your partner, you laid her out alongside everyone else, and you thought you were proving something… and yet you’re mad at Alexis for what she’s done to you? Do you see why I have a hard time trusting you, Dawn? It seems to me in your world there’s always been one rule you want people to apply to you and one rule you want to apply to everyone else and that’s just not the way things work. I’ve partnered with you since then and every time I turned around to look at you I’ve asked myself… can I trust her? Can I trust her to have my back? Can I trust her to do the right thing? Can I trust her that when there’s something right in front of her she’ll do what’s right instead of what’s best for her? And the answer, time after time with me, is no,” she says before letting out a sigh. “I hate that feeling, Dawn. Because I want to like you. See, I think I know the person that you WANT to be. I think I know the person that you’re TRYING to be. But I can’t tell if you’re just pretending to be that person or if you’re really trying, and I don’t even know how I’d know.”

“I know Tommy trusts you. I know Tommy considers you a friend. With someone people that would be good enough. With you? Well, with you I keep wondering how long until you join the next faction, you join the next cult, you stab more of your friends in the back, you turn against more of the things you CLAIM to stand for, and you end up hurting more of the people I care about? And I hope that doesn’t happen. I hope I’m wrong about it all, I really do. But the fact is that I don’t know that it won’t, I don’t know what you’re capable of, and I don’t know that this Sunday if Alexis DOES bring her friends and I’ve got your back against them whether you’ll have mine, or whether you’ve got a knife already hidden away ready to use on me. And I hate that feeling Dawn but I’m not taking the risk. I’ve seen what you’ve done to your friends. I’ve seen what you’ve done to the people who love you. And that whole ‘Wonderful Wednesday’ thing you had going on, part of me wants to believe that you’re genuinely grateful and part of me wonders if you’re hoping to set me up, to lower my guard so you can pull out that knife and stick it between my ribs,” she says with a shake of her head. “I don’t trust you, Dawn, but I do respect you as a competitor, and as a competitor I can tell you that it’ll be an honour this Sunday to compete against you, but if you’re thinking I’d be ok with losing to you this Sunday then you’re wrong. I told you what kind of champion I am. I told you what kind of person I’ve tried to be. What kind of person are YOU, Dawn Lohan? As sad as it makes me to say it, I don’t think you’re the kind of person I’d want representing this.”

She pats the title belt again. “And guys, that motivates me. It motivates me to do the right thing this Sunday, and I think I did do the right thing by giving Dawn the shot not because she’s my friend but because she never got her rematch, and yet I’m the one giving it to her. I’m not sure if that makes me a good person or a sucker. But person I know is a good person though is the final entrant in the four-way and that’s Tommy Valentine. Like I said, I know Tommy pretty well. We’ve been enemies. We’ve been friends. We’ve fought each other and we’ve fought on the same side. Hell, it wasn’t too long ago that we quite literally stole a show, was it? We fought so long they had to rewrite the show on the fly because they couldn’t fit everything else they had planned in,” she says before laughing proudly. “Yah, I know Tommy better than most people on this roster and no matter what he’s done, no matter what he’s been, no matter the people he’s aligned himself with or the decisions he’s made there’s one thing that’s been true for as long as I can remember, even BEFORE I remember sitting in the back glued to the monitor as he and Greg Cherry fought in the main event of Rise to Greatness, and that’s that I respect Tommy Valentine. He’s the one guy in this match who without hesitation I’ll say I do respect. And it’s been a long time, Tommy, hasn’t it? It’s been a long, long time. I still remember, though. I still remember another Fatal Four-Way match with you going in as the underdog and walking out as the champion, and you bet your ass I know it could happen again.”

“I know I’m not the only one either. I know the fans still remember. It’s why they cheer. It’s why they respect you. It’s why they get excited every time that countdown hits. It’s why Dawn respects you. It’s why she wants you out there with her. But I know you know about this, sweetie, because it’s something we’ve spoken about in the past, it’s something we joked about when we took each other to tell in that epic on Breakdown, and it’s something I’m more than happy to tell the world about right now: see, when you train with someone, when you respect them, when you admire everything they’ve done and you’re grateful for everything they’ve given you, sometimes it makes you want to BEAT them just a little bit more. And I’m pretty sure Tommy feels that way about me but I know damn sure I feel that way about him. I love him. I do. But this Sunday don’t confuse love and respect with pacifistness,” she says before pausing for a moment and grinning. “Is that a word? It totally should be. You get what I’m trying to say though, even if it isn’t, right? Don’t think that because I respect Tommy there’s going to be some kind of holding back. It’s actually the opposite. Because I respect him, because I love him, I’m going to hit him HARDER this Sunday. See this isn’t my first match with someone I love. Actually, it’s my third. And I have a match to make up for along the way there. That match is the one with Ace. That match wasn’t about THIS. That match wasn’t about the title. That match was about the referee. That match was about the circumstances. This one won’t be.”

“This Sunday I am going to go out to that ring after probably nodding my head and rocking out to his theme as he walks out to the ring, and I am going to hit Tommy Valentine as hard as I damn well can, and I know he’s going to hit me back even harder, and we are going to go to WAR all over again. You guys remember Breakdown? This is going to be bigger. This is going to be better. This is going to be harder hitting. I’m going to go out there and the moment that bell rings Tommy isn’t going to be my training partner, my friend and one of my former role models even, he’s going to be the guy coming for my title, the guy I’ve got to knock down no matter the cost, and this Sunday he knows, and now all of you know, that THAT is what I’m going to do. And that doesn’t just go for Tommy either. It goes for Alexis. It goes for Dawn. This Sunday, make no mistake about it, you guys are going to witness a straight up FIGHT between four people HUNGRY for this title. And this Sunday you’re going to see the lengths that Alexis Quinne will to go, you’re going to see whether I’m right or wrong to have any faith in Dawn Lohan, and you’re going to see one of the best in the business challenge for the biggest prize in this business, but guys you’re going to see one more thing as well. You’re going to see me. You’re going to see Syren. You’re going to see a fired-up World Champion looking to prove without doubt, after two title defences that could have gone better, that this belt is where it BELONGS! This Sunday you’re going to see the best in the world give it everything they have, and you’re going to find that it’s not a woman scorned that Hell Hath No Fury like but it’s a CHAMPION proving herself,” she says with a proud smile and a nod. “This Sunday it’s not about gimmicks, this Sunday it’s not about jealousy, this Sunday it’s about going out there in that ring and showing the world why I am the SCW World Heavyweight Champion, and why I am UNSTOPPABLE!”

She looks at the TV again, which seems to have been paused rather than stopped based on the look she gives it, and then up at the camera one more time and smiles. “And this Sunday I’ll have no regrets no matter the outcome, but I don’t intend on history repeating itself. December may not have been kind to me before, but on Sunday I’m going to make December the hottest month of the year! See you then, guys.”

She blows a kiss at the camera before patting the World title again proudly as the scene fades out and the video ends with the replay button flashing up on the screen.

107: History Repeats Itself

Date Posted: 10th December 2016

I've been doing a lot of thinking about the past this week, as you might be able to tell, but mostly I've been thinking about what that means for the present, and the future, and what it means for me... because four years ago I did something people told me I should regret. I didn't then. I don't now.
