The video begins and we see not an elaborate set but just a blank wall in front of which stands for the former five-time SCW World Champion Zoe Sperling, better known to the wrestling world as Syren, wearing a pink ‘STAND TALL’ t-shirt and blue jeans. She cracks her neck before getting down to business. “I could start this out with some long winded thing about how much I’m looking forward to Rise to Greatness next weekend and how much I’m longing to be in front of the fans for the whole weekend in Phoenix but quite frankly I’d be telling you what I think you want to hear, rather than telling you how I feel at this moment,” she says in a stern and seemingly angry tone. “So I’m not going to do that. That isn’t to say that I’m not looking forward to that weekend. I am. But right now I have other things I want to talk about, and one of those things is Josh Hudson. Surprise, surprise, right? He’s the reason that the last few months of my career have been SO enjoyable. That was sarcasm, by the way. He’s also the reason that I’m standing here right now, looking into this camera. Well, no, that’s not technically true. The reason I’m standing here right now, as opposed to explaining to SCW management why I sent a former SCW Champion to the hospital with two broken arms, is actually because of Ravyn. She’s the reason that I’m as calm as I am right now… and that’s not very fucking calm. The reason she’s the reason I’m not trying to permanently injure Josh Hudson is because she’s the one who talked me down from that ledge earlier tonight.”
She paces back and forth in front of the camera for a moment, her fists clenched, an angry expression remaining on her face even as she takes deep breaths to calm herself. “Yah, I know what you’re trying to do Josh. I know that you were trying to get in my head tonight. And according to Ravyn I should take some time, I should get some air, and I shouldn’t let you see that that’s what you did. She thinks it gives you the upper hand to know that you got to me by going after her tonight instead of me. And yah, she’s probably right. It’ll probably give you TONS of pleasure watching this. You’ll probably think you did exactly what you wanted. And I don’t care. I don’t care if you’re happy you got in my head. I can promise you this: the fact that you upset me tonight isn’t going to give you the mental edge on July 30th, it’s going to give me even more motivation to make you TAP THE FUCK OUT in the middle of that ring,” she says angrily, staring into the camera as she does before turning and pacing again for a moment. “You know, there are very few things that get me this angry. I’m a pretty well balanced person when it comes to this business. You tried to END MY CAREER a few months ago and yah, I was pissed, but I didn’t think about hunting you down then. But this week when you went after her to get to me… Truth is I don’t even know if you can SEE where the line is anymore because you’ve crossed over it so many times in your career and left it so far behind you’ve probably forgotten what it looked like by now, but tonight you reminded me of that line.”
She stops and looks into the camera, a snarl on her lips and fury burning in her eyes. “There’s one thing you don’t do in this business. You do not hurt my family. I’ve let a lot of people do a lot of insane bullshit in my career – I mean, this is SCW, where apparently it’s totally great if you try to murder people with your car, right? – but when you mess with my family you go one step too far. I was content with challenging you for a match at Rise to Greatness, Josh. I’ve been training hard. I’ve been practicing submission holds. Ask Dante McCaffery, or just think back to last week for yourself if you’re struggling to find him. I was content to wait until July 30th to get my payback on you and tap you out in your own match on the biggest stage. Then you broke that rule. Now I’m not content with just making you tap. You can go after me, that’s fine. You do NOT hurt my family. Ravyn’s a big girl. She can take care of herself. We all know this. But she’s also my wife. Believe me, Josh, right now I’m dying to let you see how that feels. Your wife’s a big girl too, right? Would you like it if I tracked her down and made her scream?” she asks with a dark look. “You’ll tell me that won’t be possible. You’ll tell me she’ll never scream because of someone like me. Yah, well your best bitch friend also told me I’d never beat her last year. Remind me how that turned out again? Right, she’s still not over it and she needed YOU to come after me to try to hurt me. Learn a lesson from that. Don’t tell me what I can’t do. People have been doing that for eight years. Now I’m a five-time World Champion.”
She continues staring into the camera with the same dark anger on her face. “You want to pick a fight with someone, you oversized bitch, then I’m not hard to find. Hell, why don’t I make it a little bit easier for you? Why don’t I walk out to the ring this week on Breakdown, stand in the middle of it with a smile on my face, draw a NEW line in that ring for you to walk across, and see if you’ve got the guts to answer the challenge, or if you’d rather just attack another woman from behind,” she says with another snarl on her lips. “See, I know I shouldn’t be focused on you this week. I know I should be saving it all up for July 30th. I know that that’s the smart play. But yet here I am anyway issuing that challenge, one hundred percent ready to back it up on Breakdown. See, Josh, I don’t say things that I don’t mean. When I tell you that I’ll fight you on Breakdown – not wrestle you, FIGHT you – then I will. When I tell you that you’re going to tap the fuck out on July 30th then you will! And when I tell you that after you’ve tapped I’m done with you, I’m putting you and all this bullshit behind me and moving on with my career, then you best believe that that’s happening too. I have a title to win back. You’re not part of that. Yet here I am focusing on that instead of what should be important to me. That’s what you’ve done to me, Josh. But that’s fine. You’re in my head. You will be for another few weeks. But after Rise to Greatness I’m going to be in your head, and in the record books, FOREVER. Deal with that thought. I’ll see you on Wednesday.”
She shakes her head before letting out a sigh. “He’s not the only one I’ll see though. See next Breakdown I could very well get into a fight with Josh Hudson, depending on if he has the balls to actually fight me, but whether I do or not, whether it’s before my match or not, I guarantee you that I’ll be in that ring on Wednesday to deal with ANOTHER annoyance in my life. That annoyance has a name, and her name is Christy Matthews. You remember her, right? She’s the one who made a hell of a name for herself as arguably one of – if not the singular – greatest Adrenaline Champions in history this past year, and yet still whined that she’s underappreciated. Who could forget that? And I get where she’s coming from. She’s upset that nobody has handed her a World title shot. She’s seen it happen for others and now she’s stamping her feet and puffing out her cheeks and asking why it isn’t her turn right now. In that regard she’s no different to… oh, I don’t know, how’s about EVERYONE ELSE ON THE ROSTER,” she says before rolling her eyes. “I get it Christy. You want a chance. We all want chances. You think you’ve earned a chance. Well rather than whining and crying about it how’s about you do something most people don’t seem to want to do. How’s about you step up and PROVE IT! And hey, you want to prove it against someone special? Well, I’ve held that title four more times than you, right? Not that I’m showing off or anything. So why don’t you prove it this week against me? I know you’d love to do that. After all we know each other super well, right?”
She laughs and nods her head. “Yah, we know each other way too well. I mean there’s a few things we have in common. The World title is one of them. You were the second woman to hold it, the first to successfully defend it. I was the third. I like to think I’ve created a few more memories with it than you. We also have Infamous in common. Yah, you guys remember Infamous, right? Christy does. It was the group that once upon a time helped both of us make our names. Oh, we also have the Trios Tournament in common. We were tag team partners in that. We don’t have Trios Tournament cash-ins in common though. Sorry about that,” she says unsympathetically. “What’s that other thing we have in common? Oh, right, I almost forgot: Lucas Knight. Yah, we have that in common. That’s an unpleasant memory in both our histories. Look on the bright side, he may have betrayed you by sleeping with me but at least he didn’t write about YOUR sex life in a book, right? So, I guess that’s one thing to be happy about? Do you do happy, Christy? You just seem angry all the time. I’m starting to wonder if that’s actually all you do. You’re pretty similar to a lot of people in that regard too. See I like to think, when I’m not furious about people hurting my wife, that I bring a few smiles to the table. People tend to like that. Maybe that’s where you’re going wrong. Or, and this is just a theory so I could be wrong, maybe you went wrong when you stabbed your own protégé in the back because you felt like she was ignoring you!”
She scoffs in disbelief and rolls her eyes. “I still can’t believe that actually happened. Truth is before that I still respected you. Sure, I knew you didn’t like me, I knew you thought of me as a blonde husband stealing slut, but I was like ‘whatever, she’s an amazing competitor and I respect her’. Then the Autumn thing happened. I guess now you know how it feels, huh? I mean I could have warned you that that was going to happen and I didn’t even share a locker room with her. But she’s like you, right? She thinks you forgot about her. You think Autumn forgot about you. You think the world forgot about you. They didn’t. I didn’t. You went off to have a child, a decision that I respect more than I can tell you because it’s something that I would have given ANYTHING to be able to do, and then you came back. You’ve got to respect anyone who can come back, especially as fast as you did. But after that you wanted it easy. Well it’s not easy here,” she warns with a shake of her head. “Autumn knew that. Alexis knows that too. And I’m the proof of that. I’m amongst the fightingest champions in SCW history, defending that belt against anyone and everyone, and yet every time I’ve held it I’ve had to fight through challenge after challenge just for a shot at it. Believe me, I KNOW this business isn’t easy, but I also know there’s two things in this business you do not do and the first of those is you don’t stab the people who care about you in the back just to try to get the spotlight shining on you. You’re guilty of that. I don’t respect that about you.”
She sighs. “The second thing you don’t do in this business is that you don’t take your eyes off the ball. How many of us have suffered for that in the past? And you’re meant to be the veteran, right? You’re meant to be the experienced one. Yet last time we were in the ring together that’s how I beat you. You couldn’t handle the fact that I got my foot on the ropes. You took your eyes off me. I beat you. You couldn’t handle that either. Like I said, you’re meant to be the experienced one. You’re meant to be the veteran. What the hell happened? You got beat. You got beat straight up by the little girl you never thought was on your level in the old days. And say what you want Christy but I know the way you looked at me. You didn’t want me around. The only reason you let me stay around was you needed the group as much as anyone. But today I’m not on your level anymore either. I’m beyond it. That’s not meant to be an insult either – you can take it as one if you want, I really don’t care – but a statement of fact. All those things you wish you could have done, I’ve done. All those things you used to think you could do, I’ve done. And yet people like you, and so many others, still think it’s all about you,” she says before shrugging her shoulders and sighing. “Well this week it’s not. This week it’s about you and me, sweetie. This week it’s about you and me one on one once again. This week I know you won’t be going into this match lightly. You’ll be fighting with everything you have and something to prove. I also know you won’t take your eyes off me this week. That’s good. But I’ll beat you anyway.”
She nods, a sincere look on her face. “Sorry, don’t mean to sound arrogant, but I will. I know how good you are. I know how tough you are. I, more than anyone, know what you’ve achieved. But this isn’t SCW in 2011. You’re not the special starlet who can fight her way to the World title anymore. This is a company DOMINATED by women who’ve accomplished that feat. And yah, you opened the door for that – I did too, don’t forget – but opening the door for that doesn’t mean you should be endlessly praised for it. I think it was actually YOU who told me once that in this business the question is never what you’ve done but what you’ve done LATELY. You didn’t like that, but you said it was the way it worked. Well, now you have a chance to tell them what you’ve done lately. You couldn’t beat Ace Marshall. I know you wanted to. I know you think that that would have skyrocketed you to where you wanted to be, just like you thought the TV title would as well. Well now you’ve got another chance. You want the recognition, sweetie? I’ll be in the ring on Wednesday. Come fight me. Come prove you’re WORTH that recognition. And if you do then hey, that queue that’s forming for the shot at the winner of Kelcey and Ace, I’ll let you stand in front of me because you’ll have earned it. But if you can’t, if I beat you again this week, then know whether that title is in Ace’s hands, Kelcey’s hands, or wherever it is the show after Rise to Greatness, I’m staking my claim for a shot at it and it won’t matter if you’re right behind me or all the way at the back of the line.”
She stops for a moment before laughing a little. “You want to know the one thing I don’t get about you, Christy? You’ve got this thing about your daughter, right? You want her to be proud of you. You want her to see all you’ve accomplished, right? Well tell me this: would she be proud of all the things you’ve done to get to where you are? I hope not. I hope your daughter doesn’t grow up with that mentality that the ends justify the means. I know my kids won’t,” she says with confidence. “I don’t know what my future’s going to hold. I don’t know if I’m going to remain where I am forever, move back up to the main event or slip all the way back down to opening the shows. I don’t know that. Nobody does. But I do know that wherever I end up, I’m going to make damn sure that my children have a mother they can be proud of. I’m going to make sure that my children have a mother who stands for something that means something. I’m going to make sure that my children have a mother who stands up to the Josh Hudson’s of this world, not turns a blind eye to them. They’re going to have a mother who FIGHTS the challenges that lay ahead of her, not escapes on technicalities so they don’t need to do the hard work. And that’s the ultimate difference between you and me, isn’t it? No matter where our paths lead from this point forward there’s always going to be one fundamental difference between us: you’d do anything, say anything or hurt anyone to get what you want, and I prefer to EARN what I’ve got through hard work. That means while you’re trying to screw someone over to get what you want next I’ll just be fighting my way through everything that stands before me with one simple mission: stand tall in that ring and show the world why I am UNSTOPPABLE!”
She kisses the tips of her fingers, stepping forward to press her fingers against the camera, and then grabs hold of it and points it up in her own face for a moment. “Oh, and Josh, I meant what I said. See you on Wednesday, if you’ve got the guts to actually fight me.”
And with that she walks off. The camera steadies itself again before refocusing on the blank wall and then fading to black, with the replay button flashing up on the screen.
