The video begins and we see a worn-out looking Syren sitting on a couch in a non-descript room of some kind. There’s nothing obvious that tells us where we are. Syren is dressed in a red sweater that’s unzipped at the front to reveal a purple t-shirt underneath with her picture on it. Next to her on the couch rests the SCW World Heavyweight Championship. She smiles at the camera. “Wow, you know it’s not even five o’clock yet and I’m already exhausted,” she says to the camera before laughing about it. “Hey guys, and welcome to Washington DC. It’s the final day before SCW Jealousy and I’ve finally got to take a few minutes for myself right now. First of all let me apologise to like EVERYONE on Twitter who’s been tweeting me this week because I’ve been super busy and even less responsive than normal, which is already pretty unresponsive. But right now I’ve just taken a few moments away from the big thing going on today as far as SCW is concerned and that’s an interaction event before tomorrow night’s pay per view. Now don’t get me wrong, I totally love doing these things, but they wear you out. One thing they do however is they let you interact with fans, they let you answer questions, and this week there’s been a whole host of questions that I can’t help but think maybe I need to address a little more publicly, you know? I spoke before about how crazy different this pay per view feels for me, where I’m not going up against someone who’s claiming to maim me or decimate me or someone who’s spent the last six weeks trying to injure me, and I think the questions I’ve been asked today are reflective of that.”
“Let’s take, for example, the fact that not a single person has asked me ‘so what do you really think about Donovan Kayl’,” she says with a smile. “You wouldn’t believe how often you get asked that question, only with Donovan’s name substituted for whoever you’re facing that week. People stop you in restaurants and they ask you ‘so, what do you really think about Dylan Howell’, like I’m somehow keeping secrets from them with these videos before. And normally I give the same kind of answers, you know? I spoke about giving the right answers before as well. I spoke about that before I faced Regan, the difference between what the answer that I give and the answer I want to give, but this time I think people get that there is no secret. I respect Donovan Kayl. I think everything he’s done in this business has earned that respect fifty times over. I think the fact that he’s giving back now, the fact that he’s training students, the fact that he’s passing on knowledge and even the fact that he sticks by his family – however conceited they might be – are amazing qualities for anyone to have and it’s going to be an honour to face him on Sunday. But if people haven’t been asking me about that then what have they been asking me about? Well, they’ve been asking me the normal. They were asking me about Kennedy Street and Jake Starr, and I mostly declined to comment, but then a few started asking me about David Helms. They didn’t want to know about me and David, thankfully I think that whole fad of needing to know every detail about our former relationship has passed, but they did ask about his interview, and one particular question.”
“Since it seems pretty fitting because of everything that’s happened lately, because of the match I’m in on Sunday and because people have asked me my side of it then let me give you my take on this whole debate between men fighting women and whether or not it’s fair. Because that’s what it comes down to, isn’t it? And David gave a very cookie cutter answer to the question when he was asked it, because I guess what else was he going to say? If you want to know the truth about it though then I’ll tell you the truth. 2014 was an incredible year for women in SCW. There has never been more top female talent in this company than there is right now. And so, so, so, so, SO many of them are obsessed with the World title that it’s crazy to think that it was only a few years ago that we’d never had a female World Champion. So we know that women can compete. We know that we can ‘dream’ – which was a totally lame answer but let’s move on – but if you want to know the truth about it all, coming from a woman who in two reigns held the SCW Women’s title for six hundred and seventy nine days, and has made her name in this business fighting women and men, there is no comparison between the two,” she says before laughing. “Some of the toughest matches of my career have been in the Women’s division. Some of the toughest matches of my career have been against former Women’s Champions. But there is a difference between a tough match you can walk away from and one you can’t, and the matches that I’ve found myself unable to walk after – with a few obvious exceptions – have been against men.”
“It’s obvious why,” she says with a shrug. “They’re bigger. They’re stronger. They hit harder. They weigh more, so when they put their weight behind something it hits you so hard you feel like you can’t even breathe. There are some in this business that exploit that. There are some in this business – no names being mentioned – who go out of their way to change up their game plan when they fight women to exploit those differences and to try not to beat you but to hurt you. And there is a reason that I’ve always be proud to say that I’m the Best Female Wrestler in the World and not the best wrestler in the world and that’s because of those differences. You think they don’t matter then you’re crazy. You think that it doesn’t hurt that much more than you’re out of your mind. And I’ve seen guys bounce back the next morning, get out of bed and dance a happy dance while I’ve fallen out of bed in the morning after a match unable to stand up. There is a major difference between men and women in this business, we’re not Buffy the Vampire Slayer, we don’t have super powers and when we get punched in the face, or especially attacked from behind, it hurts. And all of this seems like evidence that we should be separated. We’ve all seen domestic abuse cases; we’ve seen what men can do to far smaller women. But I’m not going to tell you there should be separation because right now I’m the SCW World Heavyweight Champion and I’ve spent the last six months proving – against William Mason, against Shaun Cruze, against James Marsh-Asher, against Dylan Howell and against Chris Cannon – that I am SECOND TO NO MAN!”
She picks up the SCW World title and proudly places it over her shoulder before grinning at the camera again. “This is the proof right here. This is what everyone in this company wants. This is the prize that you get in to this business to attain, right? And right now it’s on my shoulder and that’s not because I’m bigger, it’s not because I’m stronger, it’s not because I hit harder, it’s for one reason, one reason that I prove every single time that I step in to that ring – it’s because I have more heart than anyone has EVER given me credit for, because I WORK HARDER than anyone else and because this title means EVERYTHING to me,” she says proudly, holding up the title before flexing her other arm, revealing her not unimpressive physique before pointing first to her arm and then to her chest. “It’s not about what’s here, it’s about what’s here! That’s why I am where I am. But I’m not going to tell you that it’s all about heart. It’s not. A lot of it is about training. Now I mentioned earlier that I’ve been busy. I mentioned earlier that I don’t have a whole lot of time for Twitter. I’m totally cool with the people who do, you know? I’m totally fine with the people who spend all day tapping on their phones. But do you want to know what I spend my time doing? I spend my time training. I spend my time working out. I spend my time reviewing the tapes of every match looking for ways I can make myself better and when I find them I go out and I make damn sure that I improve on them. I was training on Christmas morning. I was watching tapes on Christmas night. And I was doing that because that’s what it takes.”
“Kelcey Wallace said yesterday on Twitter that it’s not about whining but about proving yourself, and she’s never been more right. This company right now is full of whiners, of people who cry and complain, and do you know HOW they cry and complain the most? On Twitter! There are so many who quite frankly are embarrassments to the sport on there. But whatever, I spoke about that before. Yet while they’re doing that, while they’re flirting and arguing I’m training. While they’re promoting themselves I’m pushing myself. I do yoga every day. I train every day. I push myself EVERY DAY because that’s what it takes not just to make it to the top of this business but to STAY at the top of this business,” she said proudly. “Yah, it’s about heart, it’s about pride, it’s about determination, it’s about fighting back against all the odds, but it’s also about working harder than anyone else. It’s also about commitment. Let me tell you about commitment. Whether I’ve got nineteen spots on a show or none I’m in that arena every single week. I’m in that ring three or four times a week fighting and proving myself no matter how beaten up I got the night before. And I don’t take days off. Do you want to know where I was while there was a Halloween party going on? I was in the ring. Do you want to know where I was on my birthday? I was in the ring. Do you want to know where I was Thanksgiving? Not at a table with my family eating turkey. I was in the ring. And I know this started as the difference between women and men but it’s more than that, it’s about what it takes to make it at the TOP of this business and what it takes to dream about the top, and that’s COMMITMENT, that’s HEART, that’s going out there every damn night and giving EVERYTHING YOU HAVE to prove that you’re the BEST!”
She takes a deep breath and stops herself, calming down and letting a little of the emotion subside for a moment. Then she starts to laugh a little as she looks at the title again. “Do you know how many of the whiners and the complainers can honestly put their hand on their heart and say that they’ve given that?” she asks, shaking her head. “Yah, you know the answer, I don’t even need to give it. But do you know who has? Donovan Kayl. Ok, so was it on the show on Halloween? I... don’t actually remember. I don’t think so, but at the same time it was a pretty crazy night that I don’t really remember. The point I’m making though is that Donovan doesn’t phone it in. He doesn’t need to self-promote to get attention on himself. He delivers in that ring every time he’s inside it. That’s why he’s the number one contender to this title. That’s why we’re fighting this Sunday. But make no mistake about it guys, everything I’ve just said, every reason I’ve just given you, is why I think I’m the one walking out this Sunday with the title. Yah, he’s going to hit me hard. He’s going to use every bit of his experience. What is it now, like eighteen or nineteen years in the business, right? That’s a whole lot of experience and I know he’s going to use every last bit of it. He’s going to hit me hard, he’s going to knock the breath out of me, there are going to be times in that match where I can’t breathe, where I can’t stand, where I feel like I have nothing left, and when those moments come I’m going to dig deep and find what I need to push myself back up, to keep fighting and to win because this Sunday I’ve got to win.”
She laughs and shrugs her shoulders. “What can I say guys, for me this Sunday there’s no plan B. There’s never a plan B. I don’t approach the matches thinking about the alternatives. I don’t go in to matches thinking what I’ll do after if I don’t win. I go in matches one hundred percent committed and believing in myself. And if I lose then I come back every single time,” she says proudly. “You see another question I get asked a lot, another question I was asked a whole bunch today, is why I think I’m the best, why I think I’ve got to be the World Champion, why I think I’ll be holding this belt still on Monday morning, and the answer to that is because I live for this title. I give everything for this title. And I’ve proven that so many times. Now there are a whole bunch of former World Champions who get themselves distracted. They start looking at other things. They start thinking about the United States title. They start thinking about the Adrenaline title. They find themselves associated with someone for forty seconds and they think they can be World Tag Team Champions. Not me. When I lost this belt my singular focus in my career was getting it back. I spent almost one year – three hundred and sixty four days to be exact – pushing myself, fighting every challenge, with my eyes focused on this title. It didn’t matter who was wearing it, it didn’t matter how good they thought they were, my one and only focus was on regaining this title and I took opportunities everywhere they came. Three times in a row I competed in the Trios Tournament, three times in a row I won the Trios Tournament, and three times in a row I was focused on this.”
“So you guys ask me what makes me the SCW World Heavyweight Champion, what makes me the best, and there are your answers. This title is all I want in this business and I’m going to hold on to it for every second that I can but when someone finally takes it away from me I won’t be finished, I won’t ride off in to the sunset, I won’t throw my toys around or take my ball and go home, when someone takes this away from me I’ll go back to the bottom, I’ll fight my way BACK to the top and I WILL be the SCW World Heavyweight Champion again,” she promises with a nod and a determined smile. “And when someone takes this away from me that’s what I’ll do, but I believe in my heart that that time won’t be tomorrow night. That’s not me underestimating you Donovan, that’s me warning you, ok? I know how tough you are. I’ve seen how many people’s heads you’ve just about kicked off. I know you know every one of my weaknesses as well. A guy with your experience knows how to exploit them all, right? You know the schedule I’ve had. You know how hard I fought against the Howells, how hard I fought against Dylan, how hard I fought against Chris, how hard I fought against Regan, but you better believe that I have so much more to give yet. And here’s the thing Donovan, and you know this because you’ve had enough matches around here and everywhere else to know it, I’ve already mentioned how hard men hit and how much it hurts but believe me sweetie when I hit you tomorrow night you’re going to feel it, and when this match ends and I drop you on your face – Total Makeover style – you’re going to feel that too.”
“There’s no drama. There’s no intense hatred. There are just two champions past and present facing one another in the middle of the ring, so the final question that needs to be answered is why should you order this show, right? Why should you care? I’ve got an answer for that as well. Do you guys want to know why this show is worth your money? I could tell you to look at every other match, to look at the focus on the World Tag Team Championships, to think about the competitive nature of the Shot of Adrenaline tournament, to think about all the other clashes we’re going to see, but I’m going to tell you why the main event, why the World Championship match, is worth your money alone, and it’s because while there’s a ton of respect between Donovan and me, while we will be shaking hands before this match, we won’t be patting each other on the back in that ring. We won’t be clapping each other. We won’t be congratulating each other on moves. We won’t be going easy. I respect Donovan Kayl but when the bell rings tomorrow night that respect ends and what you’re going to see is two individuals hungry for this title giving EVERYTHING they have against one another,” she promises before looking at the World title on her shoulder again. “You won’t see catch-as-catch-can, you’ll see two world class competitors going all out, beating the hell out of each other, and not stopping until that bell rings on the other side and one of them is getting up and getting their hand raised. What you’re going to see tomorrow night isn’t ‘entertainment’, its wrestling!”
She grins and nods her head encouragingly. “Yah, I know what I said, and you know exactly what I mean. This match isn’t about clichés. This match isn’t about anything but being the best. For like eighteen years Donovan Kayl has fought his way through this business and in two years in SCW he’s captured the hearts and the minds of so many. Tomorrow night he gets his chance, his opportunity. But for five and a half years in this company I’ve been fighting every challenge, rising to every challenge, overcoming almost every one of them as well, and tomorrow night I get another chance to make another step toward history,” she says proudly, looking at the World title and smiling before taking it off her shoulder and raising it up. “2014 was the biggest year of my life, the year where I evolved, the year that I stepped up, the year that I took my chances, and you guys voted me Female of the Year. 2015 is the year I just get better. So I told you why I’m here, I told you how I got here and I told you what I do to stay here. I even told you why you should pay to watch tomorrow night. Now let me tell you one more thing. Tomorrow night I’m walking in to the Verizon Centre in the nation’s capital as the SCW World Heavyweight Champion, I’m fighting the best, we’re stealing the show, and when it’s over I’m raising this title over my head still the SCW World Heavyweight Champion. Donovan, I respect you, but tomorrow night I’m going to beat you. And to anyone who can’t handle that it’s really this simple: JUST BE JEALOUS!”
She holds the title up proudly before leaning forward and kissing the camera. “See you guys tomorrow night, it’s going to be a great one.”
With that she steps away from the camera and the scene fades out. The video comes to its conclusion then and ends with the replay button flashing up on the screen.
