The video begins and we see what seems to be a hotel room with a rather picturesque panoramic photograph hanging on the wall. It was of the Portland skyline, with the water in the foreground and the buildings reflecting in it stunningly. The camera focuses on the frame and the photograph within for a few moments before we hear a voice from elsewhere in the room. “It’s the end of another journey,” says a voice we recognise as none other than Syren, in her distinctive Californian accent. The camera pans to reveal her standing there, dressed in a purple Dark Fantasy women’s formfitting t-shirt. She smiles at the camera confidently. As the camera continues to pan we see Ravyn Taylor sitting on the bed. She’s wearing a plain red top with black pants. Syren smiles at the camera though, or at whoever is standing behind it. “It’s been a pretty fun journey as well, one that we weren’t sure we were ever going to get the chance to take, but one that we’ve fought for at every step along the way. When this whole journey started it was about Infamous and Shades of the Sun, then it was about Dark Fantasy and the Rocking Kittens just for the opportunity to fight for the Unity Championships. Now here we are. It’s Friday night, tomorrow we head to the Moda Center, tomorrow we step in to the middle of an FFW ring and tomorrow we fight the most important match of our FFW careers!”
“Perhaps you could even consider it the most important match of our careers, period,” Ravyn says from the bed before standing up and walking closer to her partner. “Now we all know that Zoe and I were not new to the sport when we first stepped inside an FFW ring. That’s true of so many who walk through the doors here. That isn’t to say that the talent that are considered ‘home grown’, that the ones who learn their way here, that the ones who fight their way up here, don’t have something about them that’s unique and special unto themselves, but that’s far from the norm. To get to a company like this you’ve got to fight your way here. And to get an opportunity like this, an opportunity at being able to call yourself the best tag team in a tag team division as competitive as this one, you’ve got to have proven yourself and you’ve got to have fought for it as hard as you can. Tomorrow night the journey that Syren and I have been on comes to a head as we finally get our opportunity to fight for the Unity Championships, as we finally get an opportunity to claim our first bit of FFW gold, and for once I find myself a little nervous. I don’t normally do nerves, either. What about you baby? Are you nervous right now? When you think about tomorrow night, do you feel butterflies?”
“I’ve been feeling them a while,” Syren admits before smiling at the camera. “And in five and a half years in this business I’ve fought for titles before – we both have – but this is something special.”
“It’s special in many ways,” Ravyn confirms, nodding her head in agreement. “It’s special because we’ve worked for it. It’s special because of the history that goes in to those championships. And it’s special because it’s been a very long time since Zoe and I got to call ourselves tag team champions of anywhere, and that’s a feeling that I think we both missed a great deal.”
“Yah, more than I realised,” Syren confirms before nodding to the camera. “You see one thing I’ve learned about in this business – and this is something that Claire Black will know all about considering her history as a competitor, and not just in wrestling either – and that’s that this business isn’t about what you’ve done, but what you’ve done lately. It isn’t about how many times you’ve reached a certain goal before – that can go toward your legacy, that can make you a legend – but in the here and now it’s all about the most recent time, the most recent success, the most recent accomplishment, and it’s been a long, long time since Dark Fantasy got any definitive accomplishment. It’s been too long, in fact. Because there was a time when Dark Fantasy would have stood in any ring and fought any challenge. There was a time when Dark Fantasy considered ourselves the best tag team in the world, period. That time has long since past, we’ve both been distracted with a lot of different things, but tomorrow night we get to find out if we’ve still ‘got it’ and tomorrow night all the hard work we’ve put in, all the momentum we’ve built up, all the effort that we’ve put forth all comes to a head and you know what? I’m excited about that! This nervousness is excitement. And we both know that it’s not going to be easy.”
“That’s one thing that we can absolutely agree on with most of the wrestling world,” Ravyn says with a nod of her head. “Tomorrow night it’s not going to be at all easy. But Saturday, February 28th is going to be a night that we’re both never going to forget, for one reason or another. We’re going to write another page in the history of Dark Fantasy tomorrow night, and I want that page to be a story of success. However success against a team like KO/TO is not something that comes without a price. After all, you don’t build a reputation and establish any kind of credibility for yourself with a name like KO/TO without being able to back up exactly that in the ring, and we’ve all seen it before. They offer a simple choice, do they not? Two options: which one will it be? Well tomorrow night we’re planning a third option, and that’s victory.”
Syren smiles and nods her head in agreement. “Totally, and we’ve been doing a lot of homework ahead of this one. We’ve been doing all we can to prepare ourselves. But the thing that we did more than anything was we went back and we watched the match a few months ago between KO/TO and the Rocking Kittens. I remember watching it live that night. I remember feeling the anticipation then. I remember the promise the Kittens made to us that they were going to take the Unity Tag titles and when we met them again in the ring they’d have two belts, and I remember watching as they struggled, I remember watching as they didn’t get everything the way they thought it would go, and I remember watching in envy – and believe me, I was envious – as Serafina looked like she was going to hit Deep Meditation and Claire followed through with the Lucky Lights Out and did something that, at that point, Dark Fantasy hadn’t done. They beat the Rocking Kittens and they proved themselves without a doubt. And the fans on that night were split the whole time, but I remember the roar and the reaction when the match was over and KO/TO were your winners,” she says before laughing again. “And I was jealous because on that night you know what I did? I sat on my hands and I watched the whole show.”
She shakes her head. “I don’t like being on the side-lines,” she admits before letting out a sigh. “I never have. I always wanted to be where the action was. I would compete at every single event if I could. I would probably burn myself out pretty badly, but I’d do it because I love competition. I love testing myself. And when it came to pay per view I was hella jealous that the Kittens were out there and I had nothing to do. I promised myself it wouldn’t happen again. I used it as a motivation. Like all negative things in my life, I maybe obsessed over it a little hard, but in the end I used it to drive myself forward, I used it to set myself a goal that I knew I could achieve, and I strived to achieve it. That goal is tomorrow night. That goal is not just fighting for the Unity Championships but WINNING the Unity Championships and raising that belt over my head with pride, knowing that Dark Fantasy worked our asses off to get there, knowing that we beat some of the BEST tag teams in this company, and knowing that in order to claim that prize we beat arguably the very best tag team there is right now. And that’s not me trying to blow smoke up your ass ladies, that’s me being genuine. Claire, Serafina, I have a genuinely deep level of respect for both of you and everything you’ve done, and no matter what happens tomorrow night I get the feeling that that is only going to improve, but make no mistake about it, no amount of respect is going to stop me from taking those belts from you.”
Ravyn grins at her tag team partner’s motivation. “And that’s exactly what I like to hear,” she says happily. “Because she’s right, you two have earned the respect of everyone in this division. You proved yourselves on that night. You’ve fought hard since. But two weeks ago on Velocity you got an up close and personal look at exactly what Dark Fantasy can do, you got an up close and personal view of exactly what Dark Fantasy is capable of, and I hope that you were paying attention. We’ve seen what you’re capable of as well. We’re impressed, and it’s actually pretty hard to impress me. I tend not to go in for the hype. I tend to see only weakness when I stare at opponents for long enough. But the two of you have impressed me. Who wouldn’t be impressed either? Serafina has more than earned the respect of everyone with that submission technique, that ability to make anyone in this business tap out when she gets them hooked up just right. And she’s shown that she can make the best tap out as well, after all one doesn’t simply wander in to a reign as the No Surrender Champion, let alone one as notable as hers. You’re no stranger to success here Sera, and it could be argued that Zoe – Syren – and I truly are, but that could be all about to change tomorrow night. But you know all about change, you know about fighting for it, you know about proving yourself, you came up through Future Shock after all, so you can’t begrudge us our chance, surely?”
“Yah, but while Serafina is making all the bitches tap we both know that we can’t just be looking out for that, because I’ve been in the ring with submission specialists before, I was trained by one actually. Ivy Knight, you might know her as Jinx. She’s more than proven herself a submission specialist over the years. But what ‘ve never faced before is a boxer,” Syren says, actually seeming genuinely excited. “I don’t think I’ve EVER been in the ring with someone who has a striking game as good as Claire, who can knock you out with one well placed fist, and that is a challenge I’m dying to rise to. I don’t get to experience new things all that often, after five years I was beginning to think maybe I was running out of them, but fighting Claire is going to be a challenge and a half! And to do my research as thoroughly as I could I went back and I watched those boxing fights. Five wins, three losses, never losing by knockout, never losing by unanimous decision, and proving that she was one tough bitch because she could take a punch better than anyone. She still can, actually. So don’t worry Claire, we haven’t overlooked you, and we’re definitely not taking you lightly either. And I know that I can’t brawl with you, I know that I can’t fight with you, but you should know that you can’t wrestle with me, and you can’t fly with me either.”
Ravyn smiles again. “You two bring a unique mix to the tag team world, one that we’ve never encountered before. A striking style that rivals anyone in the business, and a submission specialist capable of making the very best tap out, you’re a unique pairing and that’s why it works. But we know a little something about working together as well,” the brunette explains with another smile. “She’s the wrestler. She’s the fighter. I’m more the brain. I’m the one who strategizes. I’m the one who plans. And believe me ladies you’re not going to outthink me in that ring, just like I know that I’m not going to beat you at your own games either. But when you step in to that ring with me a game is exactly what it will become. I know I can’t take you on by charging right at you. We both know that we can’t take you down like we would another team. We know what happens to those who’ve tried. And just because we haven’t had the success lately doesn’t mean we don’t still know how to get it done. So tomorrow night let me give you fair warning, and let me give the fans a warning about exactly what to expect. You won’t catch us brawling with the brawler. You won’t catch us trying to submit the submission specialist. Instead you’ll find yourselves out of that comfort zone, you’ll find yourselves second-guessing what you should be doing, and that’s where we’ll take our advantage.”
“Everywhere we’ve gone lately there have been people asking us if we think we can do it, and how we’re going to do it,” Syren continues, nodding her head. “There’s a buzz about this match. People are talking about it. Maybe Ravyn didn’t used to be the most popular but I like to think she’s turned a corner, so this week it’s going to be two more popular teams going at it, and everyone has their own opinion what will win out. Will Claire throw the killer blow? Will Syren wrestle her to the mat or take her out from the air? Serafina submit them before they even know what happened? Will they even work well together if Ravyn messes with their heads? What’s going to happen? Who’s going to win? Who can work the best together? Let me answer that last question for you right now. We know that you two have chemistry. We’ve seen it. We know that you two are the champions, the team to beat, but if anyone can beat you then its Dark Fantasy because we don’t just work together, we do everything together. We live together, we travel together, we share everything in our lives and there is no team in this business with a better chemistry than we have. Sure we make mistakes, every team makes mistakes, but we come back from them because we understand one another, and we’ll do anything for each other. So when it comes to tag team chemistry you guys want to know who’s got the edge? Dark Fantasy!”
“And then there’s the hunger,” Ravyn says with a smile. “You’ve both had success. You know how it feels. Whether that’s with the SVW Pride Championship, the FFW No Surrender Championship or the Unity Tag Team Championships, you’re no stranger to gold around here. We’re not. One would think that gives you an edge, until you factor in the fact that we’ve been fighting champions for a while now. It’s how we got to where we are. It’s how we’ll get even further. We don’t back down from the challenge of fighting a champion, we rise to it. We don’t cower away when we see those accomplishments. It drives us on! And you’re both very accomplished, you’ve both proven yourselves, you’ve both achieved what we’re setting out to achieve in capturing our first FFW gold. As Zoe – Syren, I keep doing that – said, people have been talking about this match, they’ve been asking questions, and they asked how we can possibly hope to beat those who have proven impossible to beat before. One doesn’t just stumble in to an undefeated streak either, let alone one as impressive as the one owned by Claire Black. And the answer to that question is simply that we’re willing to fight for it. We’re hungry for it. We’re willing to go through hell if that’s the route that we must take to prove ourselves, to prove Dark Fantasy deserve to be at the TOP of the tag team division, and everything you’ve accomplished only makes us more determined to beat you.”
“Like I already said, we respect you both more than you could know,” Syren continues, nodding to the camera. “But tomorrow night, in that ring, we’re coming to win. There’s no second chance. There’s no do-over. There’s no rewind button. There’s only ONE opportunity to win, ONE opportunity claim those titles, ONE opportunity show the world how good we can be, and tomorrow night we’re planning to reach out and grab hold of it with both hands. So get ready Portland. You’ve seen the level of tag team competition that this company has. When it comes to female wrestling you know that FFW never fails to deliver! This is the BEST female wrestling company in the world, bar none. Forget the pretenders. That means it has the BEST female tag teams in the world, bar none. We’ve fought our way to this point, we’ve got one match to go, and tomorrow night right here in Portland we’re hoping to have our hands raised and we’re hoping to leave with those beautiful shiny title belts. It won’t be easy, but then nothing worth doing is ever easy. But it’ll be worth it. So tomorrow night get ready because in a STACKED show with some of the best matches you’re ever likely to see KO/TO and Dark Fantasy are going out there not just to compete but the steal the show, and on Sunday morning when you’re thinking back over all the highlights I want you to be mentioning us, I want you to be mentioning our victory, and I want you to be mentioning the respect that we showed the champions before, and after. So it’s like this, tomorrow night Dark Fantasy are planning on becoming Unity Tag Team Champions, and if you can’t handle that you can do just one thing: BE TOTALLY JEALOUS!”
Ravyn laughs and smirks at the camera. “And you’ve got to say that it has a certain ring to it to be able to refer to myself not only as a Bad, Bad Girl, but as a Bad, Bad Champion, doesn’t it?”
Syren steps forward and kisses the camera before smiling in to it. “See you soon guys.”
And with that said we see both Dark Fantasy members turning to each other, obviously prepared, as the video fades out and comes to an end with the replay button flashing up on the screen.
