The video begins and we see what seems like the bedroom of Syren at her home in Malibu, California, but while the room seems structurally similar to the one we’ve seen in the past everything else about the room seems different. Gone is the old look, with the over abundance of pink, and while the room is still incredibly feminine looking, with pink still being a major colour in the scheme of the room, it’s no longer as bright as it’s been before. It seems more mature. Standing in front of the camera, dressed in a shirt which reads ‘Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Boss’ stands the former SCW World Champion looking confident and with a smile on her face. “Hey everyone. It feels like it’s been a while, right?” she asks with a smile before shaking her head. “It’s weird, because I actually only spoke to you guys recently, but yet it feels like everything is moving so fast right now that it feels like it’s been way longer. It even feels like it’s been a while since we were in Las Vegas, since SCW kicked off its 2016 pay per view schedule with the spectacle that was Violence in Vegas, and since I went one on one with Alexis Quinne in a match that was everything I knew it would be. It was tough. It hurt. Alexis came out on fire, determined to give everything she had in that ring and she delivered. The Alexis Quinne you saw in the ring at Violence in Vegas is a future champion in this company!”

“Now I know that I’ve been as guilty as everyone else in the past of thinking of Alexis in certain ways. I’ve looked down at her. I’ve thought of her as content in playing games, in hanging on to people like Kennedy Street, and in never taking this seriously. But last Sunday night I didn’t step into the ring with a little girl, I stepped into the ring with a warrior and yah, I wasn’t totally wrong about her, she raked my eyes, she tried to take advantage, but last Sunday she did something else as well. She stepped into the ring at the top level and she ‘killed it’. She gave me a hell of a fight, and with that she earned my respect,” she says with a nod. “I know that’s not what last Sunday was about to her. But I want her to know anyway that she earned my respect last Sunday and she proved, in my eyes and in the eyes of so many, that she has every bit of talent it takes to get to where she wants to be. And as far as I’m concerned Violence in Vegas wasn’t the end of anything for her or for me, but I do hope that it’s the end of us, at least for now. We went into that ring and we put on a show. And she proved she’s a future champion, while I proved everything I intended to prove. I said not long ago that I was going back to the bottom, that I was fighting my way back up, and that I was taking on every challenge that came my way while doing so. And Alexis isn’t the bottom. Alexis is damn near the top!”

“She came at me looking to prove herself and she gave it everything she had. But like I said, I’m not looking at Violence in Vegas at being the end of anything but the beginning of what happens next, because 2016 is just getting started, and so am I! We’ve got SO much to come now, from the first ever ‘Supreme Sunday’ to Supreme Saturday and the return of the Trios Tournament, to Retribution and everything that lies beyond. SCW is firing forward at an unrelenting pace, and I’m determined not to dwell in the back but move forward just as fast. And that brings me to Breakdown, where we’re promised surprises, where we’re promised excitement, where we’ll see new stars making their debuts and where I get to get back in the ring again against an opponent I haven’t fought in a while, and one I’m actually genuinely excited about facing,” she says with a smile on her face. “I mean how long has it been? Syren versus Katie Steward is not just a battle of former World Champions, it’s not just the renewal of a classic rivalry, it’s not just another chance to step into the ring against one of the toughest women in the history of this company, and one hundred percent deserving of a spot in the Hall of Fame, but for me this match is kind of taking everything that I’ve been through lately and flipping it on it’s head, isn’t it?”

She continues smiling widely and happily. “Now I’ll get to exactly what I think about Katie in a moment, but first I want to talk about everything I’ve been through, and the appreciation that I have for Katie more than I’ve ever had before. Because we all saw Alexis Quinne coming after me, we saw Alexis Quinne calling me out, and she’s not the first either. There have been a lot of men and women in this company who’ve called me out over the past few years, a lot of men and women who’ve put a target on my back that they were determined to take down, and I’ve stepped up against them and I’ve fought them back as best as I could. And during each and every one of those matches I’ve not been resentful, I’ve not thought about how unfair it is that I’m fighting them and not fighting for the top belts, because during each and every one of those matches I remembered one thing: it wasn’t that long ago that I was doing the exact same thing they were doing, that I was looking to prove myself in the exact same way they were, and you know who I was going after, don’t you?” she asks before nodding her head and continuing to smile happily. “I know, right? It’s so perfect right now that I can’t stop smiling about this week. While they all see a target on me and want to beat me and prove themselves I remember when I saw a target on the back of Katie Steward!”

“And seriously, why wouldn’t I? I mean think about it. When I first stepped into the SCW ring Katie Steward was the woman around here. She was at the top of her game, had held the Women’s title more times than anyone in history, and was right up there challenging the best in the world to become the first ever female to hold the SCW World Championship, something that she finally accomplished and, in doing so, in being where she was, almost paved the way for every single woman who came after her. So when I stepped into this company and I had to set my sights on the top competitor obviously it was her I chose. That’s because I wanted to do the things she’d done. I wanted to break the records she’d set. I wanted to be mentioned in the same breath as Katie Steward. And I look at where I am today, I look at everything I’ve accomplished today, and I know that none of that would have happened if not for those matches against her, whether she beat me like she did so convincingly when I was new, or whether I stepped up and overcame the name in women’s wrestling, my matches against Katie made me who I am today, and without Katie Steward there wouldn’t be a Syren,” she says with an honesty and truth about her before smiling again happily. “That’s why I’m excited about this week, why I’m excited for the first time in so long in facing her again.”

She nods her head proudly. “And while a lot of you may be thinking that I’ve got to the top, that I’ve done everything I set out to do, that I’ve broken records once held by Katie, that I’ve held titles once held by Katie, and that today people are coming after me like I once came after her, so that I have nothing left to prove this Wednesday night, you are so very wrong. You see I have so much to prove this Wednesday,” she says with another nod and with determination in her eyes. “Every time you step into that ring you’ve got something to prove, and the day you think you haven’t is the day that you should walk away because you’ve lost touch with the truth. Last Sunday I went up against Alexis Quinne and put on a show, this Wednesday I’m going up against a bona fide SCW legend and it’s another opportunity for me to prove why I am everything I’ve said I am. You see I respect the hell out of Katie. I respect the hell out of everything she’d done. I am grateful for everything she’s done, for the path she blazed, for the standards she set, but there has never been one time in six and a half years in this company that I ever LIKED Katie Steward.  But that’s part of what makes this match so magical. It’s what makes this match unforgettable for me. And it’s why there is nobody else on this roster that I feel the same way I feel about facing than Katie.”

“I mean god, the history we have I could talk about for hours. I mean literally hours. She’s the woman who gave me my first major injury when she faked an injury herself, got replaced in the tag match we were supposed to have, and then took off her fake cast and smashed me in the back of the head with it, causing me to have to spend a whole bunch more time in Australia than I planned recovering from a concussion and neck injury. She’s the woman who challenged me for the Women’s title the first time I ever main evented a Breakdown in what was then the most exciting night of my life, and the most nerve wracking at the same time. She’s the woman I competed against in my first ever insanely dangerous match; long before the Cage matches, the Thunderdome matches, the Tactical Warfare matches or the Elimination Chamber matches, and that was a three-woman ladder match for the Women’s title. Her Women’s title,” she says again with the genuine smile on her face only increasing as she continues to speak. “God, Katie and I have so much history, we’ve won and lost against one another so many times, and every time I’ve gone up against her there’s been a little voice in the back of my head that’s been screaming in disbelief. I mean it’s Katie Steward, you know? I watched her on TV. But it’s also the woman who’s caused so much pain and misery.”

“And you want to know why I’ve never liked her? That’s the reason right there. It’s not just to me either. You see as much as Katie has done, as huge as her legacy is, that’s not the only legacy she’s got, is it? She’s also got a legacy of ruining moments, ruining matches, trying to ruin careers, refusing to fight, and throwing temper tantrums in the ring and in the back that Kennedy Street, in all her bullshit, still can’t compare to today. I mean god, you only need to say the words ‘formal protest’ around SCW and everyone knows immediately that you’re referring to Katie,” she says before laughing and shaking her head. “But that’s the person she is. That’s the person she’s always been. And there have been periods in history when I’ve looked at her and I’ve thought that she’s learned from that, that she’s becoming the kind of legend and role model that she’s always had the potential to be, and then we see her selling out and joining with Silas Mason, as just one example, the moment we think we’re seeing a new Katie. And if six and a half years of history have taught me anything it’s that Katie Steward is never going to change. But maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe she’ll always be who she is. Maybe she’ll always be true to form. Maybe the one consistent thing in SCW, which has been defined by change over the years, is Katie Steward. Maybe she’ll never change.”

She laughs and nods her head. “And you know what? If that’s the case then that’s actually kind of cool. It’s another thing that makes her unique in this company. It’s another reason that we’ll always remember her name, no matter what the future holds. But you know what, now that I think about it, maybe there is one more thing that will never change,” she says before looking down at herself and grinning at the camera as she looks back into it again. “Yah, maybe that’s true. Maybe Katie Steward will always be Katie Steward, but if that’s true then Syren will always be the one who overcomes. Because while she may be incapable of changing her ways I’m incapable of ever not giving one hundred and fifty percent when I’m in the ring with her. I’m incapable of ever overlooking her. I’m incapable of ever looking down at her. Because to me she’ll always be the woman who was front and center week after week, the woman who’s name the entire world knew long before it knew mine, and the woman who did everything she could to avoid me, to belittle me, and to stop me, the woman who knocked me down, the woman who wouldn’t get in the ring with me unless I agreed to two of her friends being in there as well, the woman I hated more than any other, and the woman I’ve always wanted more than anyone to watch me standing there with my hand raised.”

“But no matter what we’ve been through, this Wednesday on Breakdown we go to war again. No matter what the past has between us, this Wednesday we step into the ring against one another and we write a new chapter in the most storied rivalry in my history, and I continue doing everything I promised I’d do. I said I wanted to prove myself. I said I wanted to take on every challenge. I said I wanted to fight my way back up. This Wednesday I step into the ring with Katie looking to do exactly that. She’s not at the bottom either. She’ll never be at the bottom. Not someone like her. But that’s what I want, because after this match, when I beat her – and I fully intend to beat her this Wednesday – it’ll be another step toward me proving where I belong, it’ll be another step in the right direction, and it’ll be another night I’ll never forget,” she says before nodding proudly. “C’mon guys, we all know that Katie Steward versus Syren is never going to get old, don’t we? And whether it’s 2009 when we fought for the first time, 2010 when I beat her for the first time, 2011 when I regained the Women’s title at her expense, or right up to the present in 2016 she’ll always be the one to beat. And in a way, if I’m going to get back to the top, then I need to face her along the way because you don’t climb the ladder without facing challenges like her.”

“I’ve changed a lot over the past six and a half years. I’ve grown as a wrestler. I’ve grown as a woman. I’ve been the bad girl who everyone hates and now I’m… whatever I am today. I’ve changed a lot. Katie never changes. Katie is Katie, and if you’re listening to me sweetie, I hope that stays the same. I’m not going to make fun of you today. I’m not going to call you names. I’m not going to repeat past material from me, or those I’ve called my friends in this business. All I’m going to say to you, if you’re listening, is this,” she says before taking in a breath and looking very seriously at the camera. “This Wednesday night I don’t want ‘formal protest’ Katie, who begs for the match to be changed and makes me face off against anyone else but her. That’s not what you need. That’s not what I need. But while your quest to win the tag titles seems to be continuing on, while your quest to continue being the legend that you are continues on, this Wednesday night I’m going to step into that ring with you, I’m going to stand in the middle of it, I’m going to look you in the eyes, and when the night is done I’m going to be standing in the middle of the ring once again with my hand held high. I wish you luck, Katie. Because I know it’s like the now-classic theme song says, you’re not cocky, right? Neither am I. And while we both may love ourselves in our own ways, this Wednesday I prove one more time that I’m the Best Female Wrestler in the World, past or present, and I guess that just leaves you to BE TOTALLY JEALOUS, for old times' sake.”

She blows a kiss at the camera before smiling happily as we fade out. With that the video ends and the replay button flashes up on the screen.

091: For Old Times' Sake

The year may only just be getting going, but SCW never stops so neither can I. Next up this year on my quest to prove myself all over again is one of my all time favourite opponents. I've never liked her, but that doesn't mean I don't have everything to prove on Breakdown.
