The video begins and we see a close up of the ring jacket worn by Syren to the ring before her matches, complete with the lettering on the back which reads ‘JUST BE JEALOUS’, but underneath that, with the camera focused, we can see the letters in stitching that reads ‘DARK FANTASY’. The video hovers on the letters for a moment before we hear Syren’s voice from behind the camera. “You know in the buildup to a big match you tend to talk to a lot of different people. Sometimes it’s fans who want to wish you luck – or occasionally tell you how much you suck and that you’re going to lose, which, you know, is always nice – and sometimes it’s for publicity reasons. The last few mornings, while we’ve been on tour, I’ve been hitting the radio stations doing advertising and talking with the presenters about Lafayette this Saturday night, about Supreme Saturday: Cajun Chaos inside the Cajundome, and yet at every single interview or with every single fan interaction they’ve asked me about the same thing. They’ve asked me about Dark Fantasy,” she says focusing in on the letters a little more before spinning the camera around and zooming out. She places it on a stand before stepping in front of it, dressed in a pink heart-logo t-shirt, and nods. “See the media and the pundits think they smell a story here. I don’t blame them for doing what they’re doing. And the fans? Well the fans think they see something brewing as well. I don’t blame them either. They all think that the story of this match, the story of this Saturday, is about Dark Fantasy. They’re wrong.”
She nods her head again as though confirming what she’s saying. “I get why they think that though, don’t get me wrong. I mean in every match people want to look for the drama, don’t they? They want the added drama, the added tension, the added excitement, and the truth is that I’m still a fan of this as much as I am a competitor and I like that too. I love sitting down and watching the big matches where there’s a ton of history and a ton of drama. And there are no matches I get myself fired up for more than the ones that have the same. There are some matches in this business, after all, that you don’t even need to hype up because they hype themselves. Rise to Greatness this year, for example, was one case of that. You didn’t need to go out there and hype up the Iron Woman Match. You didn’t need to talk about Syren versus Regan Street versus Amy Chastaine. That’s because everyone knew what the story was going into it, they knew the history this year between the three of us, and they knew what a victory in that match would mean to any of us,” she says with a nod and a confident look. “Then again when do you ever need to hype up a match between me and Regan? Our history isn’t exactly secret. People who don’t even watch the product know how much we hate each other. They know that we’ll be fighting each other forever. You add Amy into that with everything she’s done this year and it’s simple. No hype needed. Same went for me and James Evans, especially with what he tried to do to me only a few weeks before…”
“Truth is every match I’ve had since Rise to Greatness has been full of personal animosity in one form or another. The closest I came to having a match which was about competition was facing Ace Marshall before the curve ball got added as to the guest referee and… well, it’s like I said, we’re going to fight forever. But while my match against James Evans was about the SCW World Championship alongside our personal animosity, and the fact that he’d come seriously close to potentially ending my career, the match with Ace Marshall was… a little different. I’ve been asked a lot about this as well since it happened so I’m going to go on record and tell the world how I felt. You guys know how I feel about Ace, now. I still remember the old Ace, but the new one is very, very different. I consider him a friend. I consider him a worthy challenger to the World title now or in the future. At Under Attack though I got the feeling like he was more focused on Regan Street than he was on the World title and personally that’s a little insulting to me,” she says before frowning a little, as though that’s not what she wants to be saying. “When the match was first made official I wanted to be standing here right now talking about our battle, talking about the war we waged, talking about how far we both went to prove ourselves, and instead every interview I’ve done since I’ve been talking about Regan Street. Our problems with her, and her problems with us, overshadowed the fact that that match was supposed to be two of the best fighting for the richest prize in this business and honestly that kind of sucks…”
She sighs before shrugging her shoulders. “It is what it is though. And I promised myself after the match was done that the next time I was competing, the next time I was defending the SCW World Championship, things would be different. I promised myself that I wouldn’t be forced to talk about who the referee was. I promised myself I wouldn’t be forced to talk about the time keeper, or the commentators, or even management. I promised myself the next time I defended this…” she says, pausing for a second and stepping off camera before returning with the SCW World Championship in hand. She holds it up to the camera to demonstrate her point. “…the thing I would be talking about was this. See I can talk about the SCW World Championship forever. There is literally nothing in this business that means more to me than this. And from where I’m concerned that’s the way it should be. And yet in the buildup to this match once again it isn’t the SCW World Championship that’s being discussed but instead it’s Dark Fantasy, it’s Autumn Valentine, it’s the girlfriend of my opponent who happens to be one of my best friends in the world, and people have got questions about that. Everywhere I go people have got questions about that. This past week on Breakdown it felt like even Gable wanted to talk to me about that. So hell, if you guys want to talk about it, let’s go ahead and let’s talk about it. And yah, don’t worry, I’ve spoken with Autumn before I hit record, I’m not about to say anything she’s not ok with.”
She takes in a deep breath, putting the World title across her shoulder before letting out that breath as a sigh. “So, you guys know all about the SCW World Tag Team Champions by now, right? Why wouldn’t you? They’ve shocked the world several times over. They’ve proven themselves several times over. They’re on track to become one of the greatest pairings in the history of the SCW World Tag Team Championships, and that’s coming from someone else who’s recognized as one of the greatest SCW World Tag Team Champions herself. And they had a weird start in the division, that’s for sure. They didn’t fight their way in there. But they proved themselves immediately as a tag team and have been proving it ever since until just recently when problems started and rumors went crazy. I don’t need to tell you about the rumors, do I?” she asks before rolling her eyes. “And that’s one of the first things everyone’s been asking me about. ‘Are they true? Are Gable and Autumn splitting up? Is he really a player? Has he been cheating on her? Doesn’t that make you angry?’ And I guess if anyone is going to be asked about getting angry about someone beating cheated on it’s likely to be me. Last year that was the story of my Rise to Greatness. Hell, it was the story of my title reign before that considering the biggest challenge to it might just have been Regan Street, especially if I’d survived Kennedy. So everyone knows my history. Everyone knows my story. Everyone knows I’m the girl who got cheated on. So if Gable’s now doing it to my friend I must want to rip his arms off and beat him to death with them, right?”
She laughs at that image before shaking her head slowly. “Look guys, I appreciate that you all want to know what’s going on and I’ll be as honest with you as I can be here. Yah, it’s true, the SCW World Tag Team Champions are not on the same page at the moment. They’re not as close as they were. You all heard what Autumn said when she found those panties. You’ve all jumped to your own conclusions. And I get why you all want to focus on that story, I really do, but if you found this video today expecting that I’m going to deliver a rant about how much I hate Gable, how he can’t be trusted, how I’m going to beat him up for my friend and all that stuff then I’m sorry guys but you’re not about to hear that,” she says before shrugging her shoulders almost apologetically. “Am I happy about the situation? You know I’m not. Am I there for Autumn? You know I am. But it’s not my situation. It’s not my story. It’s between them. And just like Autumn and Ravyn didn’t declare bloody vengeance on David for cheating on me I’m not about to do that with Gable. Do I have an opinion on what he might have done or what he might be doing? Absolutely. If he did the things people said he’s done then would I have lost respect for him as a man for what he might have done? You bet your ass I would have. But am I now going to go out to the ring this Saturday night and beat him down in the name of my friend and in the name of all scorned women everywhere? No. No, that’s not the plan. But make no mistake about it I AM going to kick his ass this Saturday.”
She smiles at the camera, nodding her head in confirmation once again. “I’m not going to do it in the name of scorned women though, I’m going to do it in the name of this,” she says, sliding the World title off her shoulder and holding it up to the camera again. “This Saturday night I’m going to face off against Gable Winchester and we’re going to have a fight and one of us is going to win. That one is going to be me. And the reason for that is that I am the SCW World Heavyweight Champion and I have something to prove this Saturday night! And this match is the perfect match for that. Gable Winchester, personal lives aside, is the perfect opponent for me, and the reason for that isn’t because he’s whined, he’s bitched, he’s complained, he’s gone on social media declaring himself the best ever, he’s had managers campaigning for him, he’s had suck ups hyping him up and he’s been on management’s case about a title opportunity since signing his deal. No, the reason he is the perfect opponent this Saturday is because he’s done NONE of that! The reason he’s the perfect opponent is because for years – seven long, long years in fact – Gable has been one of the most consistent members of this roster. Now maybe his attitude hasn’t always been the best but even when it wasn’t he didn’t refuse matches, he didn’t have armies bully others, he didn’t try to get ahead with bullshit underhanded tactics, whether he was at his worst or right now at his best Gable Winchester shows up to EVERY match and gives everything he has!”
She nods proudly, gripping the title a little tighter. “You see, to me THAT is what a champion is! Champions don’t win every single contest. Champions don’t have to have the biggest and brightest resumes. Champions fight. Champions step up against ANY challenge no matter the odds and give everything they’ve got. Champions show up to every show ready to go, whether they’ve had their ass kicked the night before or not. And that is what Gable Winchester is, guys. Gable Winchester is a champion. And honestly it’s shocking to me, absolutely shocking, that this Saturday night is his FIRST opportunity at becoming the SCW World Champion. That doesn’t seem right to me. Does it seem right to you guys? It doesn’t seem right to me,” she says before laughing. “And it’s not a race thing either. I mean sure SCW has seen itself turn around in recent years, where once this company was dominated by nothing but white men now it’s dominated by nothing but white women it seems – plus Ace, who I’d like to give an honorary girl-card too so he feels like part of the club – and it’s true there haven’t been a whole lot of standouts representing minorities. In truth though that’s another reason it’s shocking to me that Gable HASN’T had this opportunity before, but yet you don’t see him crying about how management is racist, do you? That’s what I respect about him. That’s WHY he’s a champion in my eyes. He doesn’t pull out excuses. He doesn’t cry foul every time things don’t go his way. He gets up and fights on. Guys, if you’re looking to be RESPECTED in this business, if you’re looking for someone to emulate to get the respect of fans across the world, that’s who you look to!”
She nods again. You can see in her eyes that it’s obviously a little hard for her, given the personal problems, but she doesn’t seem to be straying from that message of admiration and respect. “The only people in this business who don’t respect Gable are those who don’t know him and who only think about themselves. But honestly this Saturday I feel is long overdue, and it’ll be my honor to be the champion who does give Gable this opportunity! That’s what I’ve tried to make my title reigns about after all. Brittany Lohan, Blake Mason, Dylan Howell, Chris Cannon and Donovan Kayl got their first opportunities at this title by facing me. I’m in my fifth reign and now I get to add Gable Winchester to the list of those who’ve gotten their first World title opportunity against me and I’m PROUD of that record, guys. I’m PROUD of being the one who gives people their chances. I’m PROUD of being the kind of champion who stands up for what she believes in. I’ve said it before I held this belt, you’re damn sure right I’m going to say it while holding it, there is NOTHING more important to me in this business than to STAND TALL in that ring, to EMBRACE opportunities rather than shoving the worthy aside, and that’s just one of the things that you SHOULD be talking about this Saturday night when Gable Winchester faces off against Syren for the SCW World Championship. There’s another as well… the fact that I’m walking out of the Cajundome STILL the SCW World Champion,” she says with a grin on her face, but a determined look all the same. “And I’m sorry about that in a lot of ways. I’m sorry that I just said all that stuff about how Gable deserves this… only to be the one who denies him. But this Saturday night I WILL deny him all the same.”
She smiles proudly, putting the title back on her shoulder. “Now you see I know Gable damn well. We both made our debuts around the same time – me a few months before but there’s no doubt he made more of an impact in the larger scheme of things than I did considering I was ‘just’ the Women’s Champion,” she says before smirking. “And I’ve been a part of every single show that Gable’s competed on. I’ve watched him fight in Scaffold matches. I’ve teamed with him in a random tag event. I’ve faced him for the World Tag Team Championships, and even beat him to both win and retain them. I watched in admiration as Gable took on the ultimate challenge with the United States Championship by defending it against anyone. I even teamed with him to win the Trios Contracts a few years ago, remember that? So when I tell you that I know all about Gable Winchester I’m not lying. When I tell you that he deserves this chance I know what I’m talking about. When I tell you I’m proud to face him you know I’m one hundred percent legit. And when I tell you that this Saturday night I’m going to beat him in the middle of that ring I hope you know that I know what I’m talking about once again. That’s not because Gable isn’t good enough either. He is. If Gable’s career, and especially his reign as World Tag Team Champion, proves anything it’s that that man is capable of beating ANYONE on any given night. But if my career during that same period proves anything it’s that when it comes to the big matches I ALWAYS deliver!”
She laughs. “Yah, the first thing you do at this point is look back to the last Supreme Saturday when I defended this title, one on one with yet another person who was receiving their first ever World Championship match against me in the form of Rachel Foxx, and say ‘well, you didn’t deliver then, did you?’, and if you do that let me answer with a question of my own: didn’t I? Rachel and me had a classic match. We tore the house down in Japan. We fought hard against one another. And on that night I’m not ashamed to say that Rachel Foxx was better than me. On that night I’m not ashamed to say that Rachel Foxx beat me. She deserved it. I congratulated her afterwards. And if Gable proves the same, if Gable is better than me this Saturday, if Gable has my number this Saturday then I’ll do the same thing again. I’ll shake his hand after the match is done. I’ll congratulate him. But while I know I’m capable of that IF I lose I’m stepping in the ring at the Cajundome with the sole intent to win,” she says with pride, putting the title back on her shoulder again. “See, I’ve got a lot still to prove. I’ve got to prove that this reign is NOT about Regan Street. I’ve got to prove that regardless of who the referee was at Under Attack I’d have left that arena with this title in hand. I’ve got to prove that the asterisk people have been quick to put after ‘five-time World Champion’ doesn’t deserve to be there, and the only way I can do that is prove it’s not about the number but the fact that I’m determined to go down in the record books as the GREATEST World Champion in SCW history.”
“You don’t get called the greatest on statistics. You don’t get called the greatest on numbers. You don’t get called the greatest because you held the belt the longest. You get called the greatest because you go out there every goddamn time and you FIGHT and you WIN,” she says with determination. “And you don’t just fight anyone. You fight the BEST! At Golden Opportunity I said in the buildup that I wanted the BEST to win the number one contendership. At Under Attack I said in the buildup that I wanted to fight Ace Marshall, to BEAT Ace Marshall, because he deserved the opportunity and that was how I proved I deserved this title. And this time around I’m telling you the same damn thing. There can be no doubt that Gable Winchester deserves this chance. There can be no doubt that Gable Winchester has EARNED this match. And I’m not going to stand here like others have and be like ‘oh, he gets a shot at my belt, no fair, I want a shot at his’. No. He gets a shot at my belt, way fair, and I’m going to beat him and show the world why it is MY belt! See I’ve had a lot of crazy going on in my life just recently. I’ve become a mother to the most incredible, most amazing twins in the world. I have the best, most understanding partners anyone could ask for. And I’ve fought hard, won my chances and proven I BELONG at the top of the SCW mountain, and this Saturday night I’m going to do that again. So congratulations Gable. Congratulations sweetie. This chance for you has been a LONG time coming. It should have come sooner. It will come again. But this Saturday, as proud as I am to be the one defending against you, won’t be the night that Gable Winchester achieves the dream and establishes himself as the SCW World Heavyweight Champion. I’m sorry for that. I really am. This Saturday night will be the night Syren proves yet again she belongs in the conversation for greatest of all time not on statistics but on heart, on determination, and because when it matters most, when the lights are on their brightest, I am UNSTOPPABLE!”
She takes in a deep breath, slides the World title off her shoulder and kisses it before holding it up to the camera. “You need to be focused, Gable. This match isn’t about Autumn. This match is about your legacy versus mine. Congratulations on the opportunity. Now prove you deserve it. I’ll see you in the ring in Lafayette. I’ll be the one dressed in pink, holding up this title, ready to prove she’s the best.”
She steps forward and plants a kiss on the hand before touching it to the camera lens. The scene fades out at that point and the video comes to an end with the replay button flashing up on the screen.
