The video begins and we see the inside of a hotel room somewhere in the Great White North. The hotel room doesn’t look particularly well used however and the camera focuses on a pink and black suitcase that’s lying in the middle of the hotel bed. The camera lingers there for a moment before we hear the voice of the former five-time SCW World Champion Syren. “Right now you’re looking at my life,” she says softly, holding the camera steady on the suitcase before moving closer toward it. She unzips it and flips it open and inside we see a washbag, a makeup bag, several folded up shirts and bits of wrestling gear including elbow and knee pads across the top of the bag, with more stacked underneath. “See, I was sat in a car this morning driving here, to Edmonton, for what should be a hell of a fun show tonight at the Rexall Place and I was trying to think what I wanted to say to you guys today. It’s kind of difficult too, you know? I mean I obviously had options. I could have put the camera on a stand, hit record, and started talking myself up, talking about everything I’ve accomplished, telling you how 2016 was arguably the greatest year of my career and then doing that crazy cliché thing that everyone does where they’re all like ‘but 2017 is going to be even bigger’ or whatever – you know, like how EVERYONE seemed to be tweeting on New Year’s Eve that 2017 was going to be their year on top, implying if they’re all right that we’re going to see the World title change hands once a week, at least – but then I was like ‘nah, I’ll do something meaningful’.”
She turns the camera around, pointing it at herself and we see that her hair isn’t overly styled, it’s just hanging naturally, she’s not wearing much makeup, and she has a very relaxed look about her. “See, as much as 2016 was a fantastic, standout year for me as a competitor, a year in which I got to be the first woman ever – and the first competitor in half a decade – to win the World Championship twice in the same year, possibly the first one ever to win two contendership matches AND two World titles in the same year, 2016 was also one of the hardest years of my entire life, and I’m not just talking about the number of dates I worked, the number of matches I fought, the number of pay per views I busted my ass in and the number of injuries I sustained as a result… because in 2016 my personal life went up to another level. I pledged my life to the two people I love the most in this world, I became a mother for the very first time to two amazing, beautiful twins and then, only a few days after being able to bring them home from the hospital, had to get back in another car and travel to another airport and head to another show… and well, that was so not easy,” she says before smiling a little and shrugging her shoulders. “But that’s my life, you guys. That suitcase is what I spend more time with that my twins. That suitcase is what I spend more time with than my husband. Instead of going to my friends’ engagement parties, or weddings, or going to reunions, or enjoying a little Netflix and chill at home in my bed, I’m living out of that suitcase in hotel rooms like this one and that life is hard…”
She looks seriously at the camera for a long moment before a smile slowly spreads over her face. “But if you think that this is a video asking for your sympathy, or expecting it, then you’re wrong. That’s not what this is about. See I don’t want sympathy because this is the life I chose, that I continue to choose, that I’ve turned down movie and TV contracts for, that I train every single day for, and that I wouldn’t trade for a damn thing in the world,” she says as the smile on her face only widens. “So, if that’s the case, then why am I showing you the suitcase? Why am I telling you about my family? Because I want you guys to know. I want you guys to know the reality of being a part of this business. People talk about ‘reality’ a lot but most of the ones who do tend to live in their own made up one, very few of them ever actually live in the real world, and the reality of this business is that it’s tough, it’s draining and to be at the very, very top of it is one of the loneliest places in the world and it means making sacrifices, it means missing out on so many things you want to do, and it means working tirelessly every single week inside and outside of that ring trying to earn yourself opportunities. And do you know how hard those opportunities are to come by? We have eight pay per views a year and a roster of more than sixty competitors. Do the math on that one. And EVERYONE wants the biggest matches, EVERYONE wants the main events, EVERYONE wants the title shots, but there isn’t room for everyone. The fact is not everyone can have their opportunities. Not everyone gets their rematches. I should know, right? It’s a dog eat dog business that you never stop sacrificing for. That’s just the way it is…”
She nods her head solemnly. “So, I hope that you at home are getting an idea about just how difficult this business can be. I mean I could list all the different minor injuries I suffered last year alone, I could talk about my friend being forced to retire due to injuries she sustained in the ring, and I could talk more about how freaking hard everyone in this business works just to get one chance at something meaningful… but instead I’m going to ask you a question. You know the reality of this business. What if I told you that there was a way you could make it so much easier on yourself… what would you do for that?” she asks, looking curiously at the camera before smiling and shaking her head. “No, I’m not talking about turning to the ‘dark side’. I know plenty of people think that that is the answer to every one of their problems, that beating people up with chairs, trying to end careers, using gang assaults and looking down on everyone like they’re beneath you is the easy way to get ahead but you guys know me and you know that that’s just not me. Besides, even that takes sacrifice and work, right? But what if I told you that there was a way that you could make it easier on yourself? What if I told you that there was a way that you could headline one of those eight pay per views, in a title match of your choosing, and you didn’t even need to go through the weeks on the road, you didn’t need to make all the sacrifices, what if I told you that you could GUARANTEE yourself a shot any time you wanted it? You’d do anything for that, wouldn’t you? You’d give just about anything in this world for a golden ticket to the biggest stage on YOUR terms…”
She smiles and nods her head. “Yah, anyone in their right mind would. And that’s nothing to be ashamed of. That’s nothing to be upset about. That’s not taking a shortcut. That’s not taking an easy path. Because this guarantee I’m talking about, it’s not just HANDED to you. Oh no. This guarantee is EARNED. This guarantee is WORKED FOR. This guarantee is one you’ve got to sacrifice for but not over the course of a year, not month after month of hoping and praying that you’re the next one with the next opportunity, waiting in line and busting your ass and just hoping nobody skips the queue and jumps in front of you… and that guarantee is what’s on the line tomorrow night, live from the Rogers Arena in Vancouver… but here’s the catch. It’s only available to three people, and in order to get your hands on you’ve got to put your differences with the other two aside, you’ve got to bust your ass harder than ever on ONE night and you’ve got to compete and win THREE different times,” she says before laughing and nodding her head. “Well, nothing worth having is ever easy, is it? And that golden ticket I just spoke about, that chance to guarantee yourself ANYTHING you want in this business ANY TIME you want it, is damn sure worth it. And, for the uninitiated, what I’ve been talking about is the Trios Tournament, tomorrow night at Supreme Saturday: Trios Tournament 2017, and if ANYONE on this roster is qualified to talk about the power and the opportunity that comes from those contracts then it’s me. I’ve held three of them. I’ve used two of them to become World Champion. And tomorrow night I’m going to give everything I have to try and get a fourth.”
She nods her head, a look of intensity and focus almost burning in her eyes. “You see I know the power of that contract, and I also know the cost of winning it. And you’ll hear people telling you that they know about this tournament, that they’re in line to win this tournament because they really, really want it – newsflash, there are twenty-four people in this tournament and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM really, really wants it – and you’ll hear people telling you that they’re going to win because… oh, you know, they’re perfect, or their dominant, or they’re a destroyer, or they’re a machine, or my favourite one of all… that they deserve it. Again, there are twenty-four people in this tournament and while it’s not the cool thing to say, while it doesn’t make me sound like a bad-ass to admit it, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM deserves it! You don’t get a spot in this tournament UNLESS you deserve it. Hell, you don’t get to step into an SCW ring unless you deserve it. They’re not bingo halls we compete in, you know? You only get to fight in SCW if you’re already one of the best in the world, so to prove you’re one of the best of those best, to prove that you’re one of the elite of the elite, to be able to grab that opportunity and hold that contract you bet your ASS you’ll prove you deserve it,” she says with passion in every syllable. “But everyone thinks they’re that much better. Everyone thinks they’ve got the bigger claim on it. And people look at me and sure, they see a threat, they see the girl they feel they’ll deserve it more if they beat, but they also see me and they say really, really dumb stuff like ‘oh, she doesn’t deserve to be here, she’s done this already’.”
She laughs and rolls her eyes. “Really, you guys? Like, how backwards is that logic? I don’t deserve a chance like this because I’ve already won them in the past? No, I deserve a chance like this BECAUSE I’ve won them in the past. I deserve a chance like this BECAUSE I’ve been here before. I deserve a chance like this BECAUSE, whether you like it or not, I am one of the best in this business, but I don’t think that that means I should have the red carpet rolled out for me. I’m going to be in the same situation as everyone else. I’m going to fight with the same vigour and determination as everyone else. And I’m going to have the same problems in my team as everyone else. Because, I mean yah, have you seen my team? Syren, Merrick Wiseman and Bree Lancaster. You’ve got a former World Champion, a former United States Champion and a former World Tag Team Champion… but success in this business is the ONLY thing that the three of us have in common,” she says before laughing. “I look at this team and I know as a fact we’re not going to get along. We’re not going to be friends. We’re not going to be the most cohesive team ever assembled. And you’re going to hear from people this week who’ll tell you that that’s a weakness. You’re going to hear from people this week who’ll tell you that THEY’RE in better positions because they’re in teams with people who they DO like, who they go to dinner with, who they can strategize with… and we know that won’t be happening in my team, right? It won’t. We haven’t had team meetings. Even if I were invited I’m not sure I’d go to one. But let me tell you now why we’ve got a chance in this thing: because all three people in this match are DEADLY inside that ring.”
She nods her head. “We don’t need to be friends. We don’t need to get along. You’ve seen it with teams before – and I’ve been in them – where you don’t need to be cohesive… you’ve just got to be better. You’ve got to hit harder. You’ve got to go longer. The only way you win this tournament is being standing at the end THREE different times tomorrow night and while I may not personally LIKE either of my partners or the things they stand for I’ll tell you this, knowing what Bree and Merrick can do you can guarantee that this is a team with three people who are MORE than capable of being the last one standing at the end of ANY match,” she says with confidence. “There’s one more thing as well – you can guarantee that there’s no doubt that Merrick Wiseman, Bree Lancaster and Syren all want to get their hands on one of those contracts. When the match is done we won’t be writing each other or texting each other or being best friends on social media, but while this tournament is going the three of us all want the same thing, are all willing to make the sacrifices needed to get it, and all have the talent to pull it off. But then you can make the same statement about all the teams in this tournament, can’t you? And maybe, just maybe, there’s no team you can say that about more than the team of Rachel Foxx, Shane Lawson and Selena Frost, the very first combination of three who’ll be standing between us and what we want come tomorrow night. I mean in that team you’ve got pretty much everything. You’ve got a woman on fire right now in the form of the World Champion, you’ve got a woman who’s done almost everything there is to do in this business in Rachel Foxx, and you’ve got a veteran of the squared circle looking to prove himself all over again in the form of Shane Lawson. That’s what you call a pretty deadly team, am I right? Totally!”
She nods her head before smiling. “Now most people would see that kind of challenge in the first round and get a little put off, I mean the best way to go about the tournament is to have an easy match to build some momentum first, right? No, I disagree. I don’t want an easy match to kick things off. I want to get into it from the very beginning. I want to face the BIGGEST challenge in the first round, and maybe that’s what I’ve got. I mean, the last time I was in the ring with Rachel Foxx she took from me that very championship that Selena Frost is bringing to the ring tomorrow, so I definitely have some history with her, and I have something to prove against her as well. And then there is Selena Frost, the reigning World Champion, carrying with her a belt I lost without being pinned or made to submit. That’s not me disputing her legitimacy as World Champion. I wouldn’t. She IS the SCW World Champion, and has proven how damn good she can be, but it’s a fact nonetheless, and that means tomorrow night I have something to prove against her as well,” she says with a grin. “So, as if I needed any more motivation, there you have it. But when you look at this tournament I’ve got similar stories with just about every other team. Everyone knows I have a score to settle with Alexis Quinne and Punk Hazard, and two possible chances to do that this week. Ace and I put on a show the last time we fought, you bet your ass I’d LOVE to do that again without distractions this time. I have a major problem with Vixen Cain after what happened last year with him and Ravyn that I’d love to settle tomorrow. Then there’s my history with Blake Mason, Katie Steward, Jake Starr, the fact that I never even GOT my match with Gable Winchester, and so much more…”
She just stops and laughs. “Seriously, it’s crazy, you line up ANY combination of the teams and there’s SOME reason that I’d love to face ANY of them, but at the end of the day there’s only ONE reason that we’re ALL competing tomorrow, there’s only ONE goal in mind for everyone here, and it’s the prize that’s on the line. Not going to lie, I would LOVE to pin Selena Frost in the middle of that ring tomorrow and remind the world why I am a five-time World Champion, but whatever the story with Selena and me might be the bigger goal HAS to be on just going through the first round. And while I can’t imagine for a moment that Bree Lancaster OR Merrick Wiseman will do anything I tell them to do I guarantee they’re listening to this right now and if they are THAT’S the message I want to send them both. Guys, this isn’t about you. This isn’t about your issues. This isn’t about your rivals. This isn’t about putting YOURSELF in the spotlight. You want the spotlight? You’ll get a chance to get that ANY TIME YOU WANT if we win this thing. Focus on that,” she says, nodding her head. “Focus on the possibility. Focus on the potential. Because all three of us know how brutal this business can be. All three of us know how hard it is to get the chances at the things you want. All three of us have been through hellish situations and come out with nothing. Tomorrow night we have our shot to get anything we want out of this… and all we’ve got to do, while it sounds super easy, is just win. Yah… just win. So easy when you put it so bluntly. But at the end of the day isn’t that what the Trios Tournament is all about?”
She nods her head again. “I could talk about how badly I want to entertain tomorrow night. I could talk about putting on some match of the year candidates. I could talk about getting in the ring with Rachel and Selena and stealing the show and sending everyone home happy. But none of that will get me where I want to be, and tomorrow night is all about getting where you want to be,” she says with another nod. “But no matter what happens tomorrow night there’s one thing I’m going to do that I haven’t really ever done in a Trios Tournament before… and that’s enjoy it. You see, if 2016 has taught me one thing it’s to enjoy every moment that I can in this business, and tomorrow night will be no exception. Tomorrow night will be a fight, a challenge of the highest order, and a competition for a prize that’s worth more than anything else in this business… but I’m not going in there screaming how I’ve GOT to win, claiming conspiracies against me or putting the extra pressure on myself. At the end of the day I’m going into tomorrow night and I’m going to enjoy every moment I can, I’m going to give everything I have, and I believe that tomorrow night could end with my fourth Trios Contract and a whole world of possibilities ahead of me… but I’ll still go in there with a smile on my face. To my partners, think about those possibilities. Think about what we can do together for just one night. Think about the opportunities we can EARN together. To my opponents I hope you’re thinking about that too, because tomorrow night is going to be a hell of a ride. And to everyone else… well, you guys know I’ve never claimed to be unbeatable, but tomorrow night I intend to step up my game once more and show the world why I am UNSTOPPABLE!”
She turns the camera around to focus on the suitcase again. “It’s like I said you guys, right now you’re looking at my entire life,” she says again before taking a deep, confident breath. “Tomorrow night I’m leaving everything in that ring just to try and win one more opportunity to better that.”
The scene slowly fades out, remaining focused on the suitcase, until the screen turns completely black. A few seconds later the video ends and the replay button flashes up on the screen.
